I'm planning this for 2 A and 2C:

Tokyo-Kanazawa
Kanazawa-Kyoto
Kyoto-Nara
Nara-Kyoto
Kyoto-Tokyo

I understand that it is slightly worth it ro get the JR Pass but I've also read online that you have to only take certain trains and may take the wrong one and hence get penalized.

Besides cost savings (not sure if kids will save much), what are the other advantages?

-able to reserve the seats before hand (is it possible only after we activate the pass)?
-are there any other transport we can use besides on the trains during this 7 days?

IMHO JR pass is really worth it if you plan to do your major travel within 7 days.

From your itinerary only Tokyo-Kanazawa and Kyoto-Tokyo is Shinkansen. The Kanazawa-Kyoto is express train and Kyoto Nara can even take local commuter line (seating like our mrt) I think you should approach it from whether 7 days is enough for Kanazawa, Kyoto and Nara. If it is then the Jr pass is a good way to bookend the trip. If not then plan a more relaxed trip and can include other transport including domestic flights. Or even open jaw if flying sq, In TYO, out KIX.

More like we can only afford this timing for these few places and we've been to Kyoto/Nara before, so we will be spending a little more time at Kanazawa and Shiragawo this trip.

Since you have been to Kyoto/Nara and wish to spend more time in Hokuriku Region, you should probably spend more days there..

Nagano, you can go Matsumoto, Kamikochi
Karuizawa can go Premium Outlet and the street
Toyama can go to Starbucks, Fugan Suijo cruise, from here go Shirakawa-go, can also go Kurobe Gorge. From Toyama to Nagano, can consider using Tateyama Alpine route
And then the last 3-4 days in Tokyo. Calculate your fares and see if you need Hokuriku Arch Pass(Price not hike yet)..

Seems like the fare if I buy the JR pass or if I buy the tickets separately are about the same based on my itinerary.

I'm still going back to Kyoto and Nara for my kids. They haven't been there.

U calculate the cost of the individual one-way tickets to see if its cheaper than $274~ (7 day JR pass price).

Usually one way not worth it ... the pass works best if you are having multiple shinkansen round trips ... if you want a relaxed trip at your own pace just get the tickets as per normal

Arriving Tokyo and departing Osaka?

If yes confirm not worth it..If return also need a few side trips to break even..

Consider getting a regional pass instead. Some JR regional pass also allow you to use the intra city JR lines so it can be your benefit.
For example, my JR Setouchi Area Pass allows for intracity travel within Osaka such as the Osaka Loop Line among other lines, including day trips to Nara as well.

Osaka-Tokyo Hokuriku Arch Pass is the regional pass you can consider. Once again, do calculate to see if it is worth your while.

im buying from Klook,

anyone bought from there I saw that received voucher codes are purchase. Is that the only required for the validity of the JR pass?

Saw the 5 delivery exchange order to be send. What is the exchange order about?

It's just a voucher which you would need to still exchange it for the actual pass at JR Service Center, tell them when/which date you want it to be active then you can start reserving shinkansen tickets on and after active/start date.

Where can i see the new single ticket prices?

I am planning 13 days trip. Tokyo-Hakone-Kyoto-Nara-Osaka-Tokyo

Seems like not worth 14 days JR pass (Old prices)

Doing almost similar, I don't think its worth it, there are directly line between Tokyo and Hakone, 7 days pass might be tough to cover you from Hakone onwards.

If you need a JR Pass after 1 Oct, you might want to consider this alternate hack, which may end up cheaper depending on ur schedule. Ticket valid for 12 days 1 way, can take Nozomi non-reserve seat.

What about 5 days covering KIX Airport- Kyoto - Nara - Hiroshima - Miyajima - Himeiji - Arashimaya?

Worth while to get the JR Kansai – Hiroshima Pass?
