Recommended..A round trip would have cover the cost of the JRP(Fastest shinkansen using JRP is hikari)

Use hyperdia to get the cost.

well it depends on what TS is doing in Osaka

if shuffling around the region around Osaka itself, you can use the pass quite heavily. There are also parts of the JR line that can allow you to do sightseeing in Osaka itself if my memory serves me

S$335 to shuffle around Osaka other than the Tokyo/ Osaka return Shinkansen ?

I will be using it next week Tokyo - Yamagata etc / Nagano etc / Nagoya & back to Tokyo for the same $335.

I used the 7DJRP even further north & south Japan .

Depends. My upcoming trip i will do Tokyo -> Kyoto -> Tokyo

JR Pass is not worth it because i will not travel outside of Tokyo or Kyoto that much. 8 Nights Kyoto, 6 Nights Tokyo, 2 nights Hakone.
I will buy Nozomi Green Car seat.

For longer trip, like 1 month length which i do every year during Autumn then i will get 21 days Pass since i got much more time to travel to more places. 4-5 weeks

Often people fall into this trap that they are forced into making long day trips just to fully utilise their JR Pass. But then most of the time is wasted on the train. Time in Japan is money. Time wasted is money wasted.

I have traveled to Japan about 10x last few years like you.

Like you, the purpose of traveling to each location / season are specific.

Don’t tell me that you’re still going to all those famous Tokyo / Osaka / Kyoto tourist spots in each trip . :o

Upcoming trip only 2 weeks. Not enough time to go to Osaka. Skipping it. Kansai will be Kyoto, Nara and Yoshino only.

Tokyo 6 days also very short. Most places skipping. Just going there to eat mostly.

Upcoming only appetiser. Main course still in autumn which is 32 nights. Maximum enjoyment.

I always wonder why many Japan newbies want to cover Tokyo + Osaka in a week & end up being told a $335 7DJRP is ‘worth’ it.

you do cover the cost of the pass but there are other options. I mostly plan to utilize the pass as the main means of travel in Kansai area.

I used a 7 day JR pass almost fully in Osaka & Kyoto. Land at Narita and long hauled it to Osaka, used the pass to move between Osaka & Kyoto and within Kyoto wherever possible. The last day of the pass was used to go back to Tokyo.

in most cases, if you are just going to Osaka and not doing too much there. A budget flight or just landing there might make a lot more sense.

But there are certain routes which is better to take private railway.

For example if want to go Nara from Osaka or Kyoto. Think its better to take the Kintetsu Line rather than the JR Line.

Because Kintetsu Nara Station is more convenient and nearer to Nara park.

The difference is in the opportunity costs. JR coverage is only adequate after all

Y not worth?
Tokyo to kyoto and back is already 2 x 13400yen. Plus the trips u make within the city, surely u will hit 29110 yen rite?

I dun think ppl are forced to make long trip to utilize their jr pass if their plan is already to go from tokyo to osaka/kyoto and back.
But i do agree that lumping tokyo and osaka together especially for first trip is not very economical.

In fact, for ppl who visit japan often, i dun see the need for 7-day jr pass. Just focus on a region and get regional passes

It depends on which part of osaka u staying also. If u staying near jr osaka station, can just take jr line direct to nara

I say no difference. So long as there’s designated luggage space in the trains you’re taking.

If you round trip occur within the 7 days. For me, my 2nd leg back to Tokyo is outside of the 7 days so next alternative will be 14 days pass. 14 days Green is almost 63k Yen.

I will be going to and fro and getting a jr pass for 5 peoples is to expensive if I do not make full used for it. Going to Osaka for sightseeing and to USJ and back to Tokyo that it. Second choice maybe just take a domestic flight?
