JR Passes - Kansai

Hi JP experts,

I'm visiting Kansai for 7 days this Dec. Using Osaka as base, I'm doing day trips to:

Kyoto
USJ
Himeji
Kobe
Arima Onsen Town

with about 2 days in Osaka.

I've already purchased Osaka Amazing Pass for travel and sightseeing in Osaka.

I'm looking to purchase a JR pass for the daytrips out.

There are a few like Kansai Thru Pass (non-JR), JR Kansai Area Pass (JR w/o shinkansen), JR Kansai Wide Area Pass (JR and shinkansen)

I've narrowed down to the JR Kansai Wide Area pass

It allows 5 consecutive days unlimited travel on shinkansen and JR trains.

Is the shinkansen addition worth it?

Hi sorry to interrupt. Can i check if we got the JR pass, is it we can use it to take the rail service among Kansai area? Very confuse on the pass that i should buy

Fyi, I travelled Kyoto/Osaka/Nara/Himeiji/Kobe last year, I only bought these 3 pass ...

1)Kansai One Pass (Limited Icoca card for tourist ) https://kansaionepass.com/en/

2)Kansai Area Pass 1 day (for Osaka to Himeiji+Kobe)

3)Osaka Amazing Pass

JR pass is only for taking JR railway, there are alot of smaller railway company other than JR in japan.

So for some railway in kansai, you will need to pay.

In my opinion, you’ll only maximise the value of a JR Pass if you venture further and take shinkansen/limited express trains.

Typical Kansai itinerary with base in Osaka/Kyoto, visiting Nara, Kobe, Arima, even Himeji can all be done without any rail passes (unless you make a lot of trips per day), or with just Kansai Thru Pass/various day passes from private rail operators like Kintetsu/Hankyu etc. Within the cities Kyoto, Kobe, Nara, I find private rail lines much more useful.

I would only go for the Kansai Wide pass only if travelling much further like Okayama, Amanohashidate, Wakayama region, as suggested in the Japan Guide article. To Himeji, both JR and private lines can go there direct, only difference is speed (JR has the advantage here)

U only need JR kansai area pass for 1 day to visit himeji. The other places not worth getting JR pass
