Just came back from Manila from a business trip. Our SG traffic congestion is considered a non-event when you compare to theirs. For a short 15km, can take as long as 2 hours to go there. a long distance runner can cover that distance in less than an hour

Seriously, I visited a couple of places to give talks and nearly left my heart there. Among the crowd always got some chio Filipino girl. They are very sweet. The kind you want to bring home to your mother to see.

My impression on their counter security guard also good. Every where I went, the counter security is always a female in uniform. All look very fit and tough. Not the old ones but the young ones. Usually tanned and armed to the teeth. Pistol and baton. But there was one though not so chio but she looks very healthy and fit. I think can tackle me down and beat me to pulp.

When it was time to leave I was at the airport counter and there was served by this Filipino PAL crew. She was also rather chio. She asked if I had anything fragile in the bag, I said "My heart". She was flattered and laughed.

But seriously, the airport really CMI lah. Good thing the new terminal coming up. The aircon not working well and it was very hot. I took PAL. I think it is the airport management and not so much the problem with PAL. I took the morning flight from SG to NAIA T2. No problem because plane is already sitting in Changi waiting to fly. At NAIA T2 for the return, from 6:30pm, flight got rescheduled to 7:35pm and then there I changed gates three times and then finally boarded at 8:00pm but the plane didn't take off until near 9:00pm. :s22:

What the press reported is the T1 which Jetstar and I think Air Asia uses. So the immigration queue is very long. T2 which PAL uses is much faster since it is their national carrier. All the baggage must be X-rayed before entering the airport. So got a long line before entering. Then your carry on is X-rayed before entering to the transit area. Oh yah, forgot to add. They got a terminal tax of PHP550. Must pay before getting to the immigration counter.

Manila there is nothing much and I don't recommend anyone going unless on business or you just want to experience the city. The traffic jams are really crazy and it is not their normal roads that just have the jams. It is their highway even! However for internal transfers because you are heading to Boracay or some idyllic beach locations that The Philippines offers, I suggest taking PAL even though there are delays. At least they connect you better to the final destination.

I came back with something yummy and it is their buko pie. Buko is coconut and yes it is a coconut pie. The brand I got is the Orient Bakeshop which is located in Los Baños, Laguna which is pretty far away from Metro Manila.

Orient-The Original Buko Pie Bakeshop Menu - Los Banos, Laguna - Foodspotting

It's along the highway. My host recommended me this because it is the most naturally flavored and least sugared. There is Lety's and Colette's Buko Pie as well but these are very heavily sugared. Verdict of the pie? Really to die for if you like coconut flesh.

I went to lots of places to eat. Jollibee there is a no brainer but over there, Jollibee is a BIG FOOD EMPIRE called Jollibee Food Corporation. They have 4 fast food restaurants under their name. Chow King (fast food chinese), Greenwich (pizza), Jollibee, and Red Ribbon Bake Shop. I stayed at this boutique hotel called the Sulo Riviera Hotel along Matalino St. At the corner of East Ave and Matalino is the cluster of all four of these restaurants.

The thing about the Filipinos is their love for music. I went to a hospital (St Luke's Medical Center), there is a grand piano sitting on the waiting area and this customer just walks up there and starts playing a beautiful number. I went to the Alabang Town Center Mall at Makati, there is also a grand piano outside a cluster of restaurants and this old balding geezer with grey hair just sat down and started playing energetically. After the first number some lady walks up to him, makes a request, he plays and then she sings hitting all these high notes!

Bottom line:
If you are there for business, OK. I don't recommend Manila to anyone. Use Manila as a connection to somewhere else in The Philippines like an idyllic beach location.

Nice report!

I was there a couple of years ago and the only traffic jam I encountered was the one going to the airport. That was terrible!

Terminal deserved its reputation as that worst in Asia!

But, food was good...people friendly...and I got to see Corregidor!

Their gahment really in a strange juxtaposition. Corrupt at one hand but also made the right decisions on the other.

Firstly, you will notice that all the fast food places, shops etc all use paper bags. They have a law that plastic bags must be paid before you can obtain one for your use. Paper on the other hand don't need you to pay. This good if you understand that in SG, our landfills are being filled with waste plastic which takes bazillion years to decompose.

The reason they got so many cars there is due to bad policy as well. They tried to restrict car use by using the number plate system. Last number is odd, bring the car out these days. Even the other days. The result? Filipinos buy two cars and alternate their use! :s13: The gahment I think knew this will happen or rather the car dealers might have paid the politicians to put this policy in place.

Wah lau, I had traffic jam for all the 5 days I was there. I think the worse is Metro Manila and the Filipinos there complain that at least our MRT got some breather at off-peak, theirs is crowded at all hours like their traffic. The bloody highway was jammed all the time. I went down to Laguna and the highway had more cars but the toll gantries are jammed to the brim. Good thing my hosts drive me around. I would be cursing all the way. Their patience is really good.

I heard that on Christmas, don't go to Manila or anywhere in Luzon. All the highways are jammed to a standstill, drivers can come out, go da bao food then come back to their cars. :s13:

OK now for some pics. Sorry. No Filipino chiobu pics. I met a many and got dumbstruck. Got one time I was presenting in a hospital and I was staring at one that I have to be prompted by a colleague to commence the presentation. :s13: The chio ones are the Chinese ones but there are some real pretty native Filipinos that are just so pretty with their smiles.

Ate in this place called the Bagoong Resto. Basically Bagoong is shrimp paste. Quite like the chinese one but their shrimp is still in pieces. Salty taste and best use a sour green mango dipped into it to eat. They serve this awesome dish that is eggplant wrapped in an egg omelette. Emannuel Stroobant (Chef in Black) picture featured there. He visited the place.

All over you will find this shop called Pan de Manila. Their signature is the native bread of The Philippines. The Pandesal which means "bread of salt". It is so good by itself, you just eat it by itself. I like it that way. Can slather butter over if you like.

Buy the small ones. Eact is around PHP2.60 only!

Pan de Manila is such a traditional shop. I saw Breadtalk there. I hope Pan de Manila will stay and not get ousted by Breadtalk. Pan de Manila has many shops that are opened 24/7 and the service girls there are dressed in Eurasian Filipino dress with head scarf. Look very cute. The Filipinos also have a love for language expressed in nostalgia. See what the Pan de Manila bag says.

Now for some grilled food. If you like grilled squid, check out Gerry's Grill. Damn good.

pgKNJEU.jpg

Think of it as the Korean BBQ squid from the stands at HK's Ocean Park but with lots of sweet sauce.

Now for my buko pie! The box!

mGAIvfe.jpg

I proceeded to finish half of the pie. Gave the other half split to quarters to family members.

This is not a policy unique to the Philippines. Other cities have also done this in order to cut down on traffic and pollution.

Of course, if you're rich, you can do whatever you want to circumvent any policy.

Can go elsewhere in The Philippines but I don't recommend Manila.

If got kids, I don't recommend Boracay. It is a party island.

El Nido is pretty good from what my hosts tell me.

Pangiao is also good. Lots of marine activities.

Siargao islands is another according to some.

ANYWHERE IN THE COUNTRY EXCEPT MANILA!

This June I will be going to PH for the third time.
Been to Manila, Baguio, Cebu, Bohol, Negros and Palawan.
It really is an understated travel destination.
Beautiful scenery above and below water, super friendly people (i got invited for dinner and a free night stay at a stranger's place, have my pedicure paid for by another stranger, ...), but the food is so so only lol (except for chicken inato!).

I have 1.5 days in Manila this June. Looks like MRT is a more reliable mode of transportation. Any comments?

I've been to Manila at least a dozen times, and my observations are quite inline with the above:

1. Traffic sucks sucks sucks. Bumper to bumper traffic, and it's so bad they have traffic police directing traffic at major intersections.
2. Airport sucks sucks sucks. For an international airport in the country's capital, it is terrible. No comfy place to rest or have a snack. Crappy 7-11 style food is the standard. WTF.
3. Taxi drivers suck suck suck. Many of them try to kotok tourists and not use the meter.
4. Crooks suck suck suck. If you go to old Manila, be very careful as there are many pickpockets. I kenna before but luckily they grabbed the wrong stuff and only stole my spare batteries (for my phone).
5. Corruption sucks sucks sucks, though it probably won't affect you directly as a tourist. People actually buy police badges and then use them get around regulations. WTF?

On the plus side:
1. Food is excellent if you go to the right places. Ask the locals for recommendations for the best sisig, sinigang and other goodies. Avoid the low-to-mid-range international cuisines (Japanese food, etc).
2. Malls are plentiful and large if you are into shopping, and range from upscale (Greenbelt) to MBK-style ones(Greenhills).
3. Beautiful scenery once you get out of the cities, but truth be told I have not done this yet.
4. Makati Shangrila is among the nicest hotel I've ever stayed in, and it helps that they employ very sweet girls as receptionists, as lobby staff to welcome guests, and as waitresses in the hotel lounge :)

Like the others, I don't suggest Manila as a destination in itself, but other parts of Phillipines are probably better destinations.

i frequent mnl and i must say the airport and traffics indeed sucks. I took SQ most of the time and land in NAIA3, looks big but messy, T2 is horrible to the max, worst than most 3rd world country domestic airports. never tried T1 AND T4. a 35km journey took me nearly 3 hours. almost fainted in the car.

bottomline, business - no choice, tourist - think twice

Mall of Asia got nothing much. It's pretty far from the city. It's next to the coast.

Greenbelt has more action/things to see and do.

OK notable improvements. No need to queue up to pay for the airport tax. Now all inclusive with the fare.

I was in Quezon City near to UP Diliman. Needed a taxi and it was rush hour. My host whipped out the phone to call GrabTaxi. I asked any issue with GrabTaxi? They say sometimes the taxi driver dump you somewhere else because traffic jam to hiong. They will fake aircon spoil or something. I say, let me try UberX. Wah! UberX really booked fast. She say UberX very slow in response. Car that came to pick us up is super clean like private car. So I should say, try UberX when getting around.

I went from UP Diliman to Luxent Hotel only cost me PHP133.
