since the 4080 have 16gb and 12gb, will there be unscrupulous sellers online or in SLS doing bait and switch?

for example u ask them build a rig for you and they swap the 16gb gpu with the 12 gb one.

or how about those gamers buying GPU only? possible to switch the gpu inside between the 2 boxes and sell to customer? customer bought 16gb GPU go home and install and realise kana bait and switch with 12gb but not able to do anything as they give the box is 16gb and you have no proof they bait and switch the gpu inside.

There are serial number to match as primary deterrent.

Best to check before leave the store as precautions since you have this concerns as those who are having the same worry will do their own double check or triple check to confirm correct card.

If purchase online then take open box video and match serial number.

Err your problem can apply to any combination of cards. Might as well say seller sell you 4080 but bait and switch into 3080
