Hi all, am planning to visit either one of these places for a few days but since I've never been to both, would like to ask which one you all preferred when you went. I understand that they have different appeals and sights but just curious what everyone's thoughts are. :)

Also, which would be a better place for a base? Kanazawa seems more connected and it seems like a day trip to Takayama is doable. Or should it be the other way around- use Takayama as a base instead?

I've been to both places...and here's my 2cents:
- I prefer Takayama, because I'm into photography and I love taking photos of the old town. Also, I absolutely fell in love with Hida beef (which you can find almost everywhere in Takayama)
- Kanazawa has a little bit of everything...beautiful garden, and a few smaller old streets. But I still prefer the old street at Takayama.
- Takayama is smaller, so if you are not into old street, there's really nothing much else that you can visit. I don't even recall coming across any fast food outlet...if you are into fast food.

Basically speaking, if you are into old streets/buildings + likes beef, go Takayama. If not, then Kanazawa's probably better for you.

I am also planning a trip to

Kanazawa
Takayama
Shirakawa-go
Gokayama

I have a 3 yr old girl. Which would be a better base? Kanazawa or Takayama? Prefer to make day trips out instead of travelling to/fro many cities.

There is at least 1 Mcd in Takayama. I have seen it near the train station.

Kanazawa is quite posh, has nice shopping malls if you like to shop. And starbucks everywhere I think.
