you can take one of those mini vans from victory monument, takes you to kanchanaburi but once you reach there you'd have to book a 'taxi' ot van to take you around....

actually, why not stay the night there? some nice hotels/bnbs near river kwai. gives you more time to explore... just a thought. my parents did a 2D1N there and quite liked it, very chill. But don't go expecting a very beautiful/clean river. just somewhere very laidback and good to relax.

u can rent a car better... at least u have time control on your site vs guided tour. but make sure u know the route... u can bring your own gps (download a thailand map) then explore.

i went there many years ago. joined a bangkok free & easy local tour who picked me up from my hotel and sent me back as well. extended my stay. then joined a floating hotel's sight-seeing tour to visit hellfire pass, the bridge, the memorial and I forgot what else. For a solo traveller, I find that most economical and flexible.

It is a lot easier to drive in the country than in Bangkok. Driving is on the left side of the road like we have. Our licence can be used.

the thing about guided tours is sometimes they bring u to non interesting places and u follow strictly to the time... if u are the type u just want to see and move on to next spot, guided tour is for you.

i prefer take my own sweet time... hang ard longer if i like the spot before moving off.

so even if i travel alone (as in the past), i always plan my own transport to get to the place. troublesome but at least hassle free.

it would be best to hire a taxi on full day. my last trip i went river kwai in the morning then tiger temple in the afternoon as the temple only opened after 1pm.

how much u hired a cab e other time?

i think it was around 3000-3500bht. actually not much to see at tiger temple unless you want to play with them which is at extra cost beside the entrance ticket.
