After graduating from Murdoch Programme in SMF(Previously called SMa), they are now sending me a letter to pay outstanding amount of abt $1500 thru a registered mail within 10 days else do legal recourse. But i'm 100% i don't owe them any money at all. They always will check that u made your payment nicely before allowing u to get your certificate allowing u to grad, and now after 3 years, they say they fail their finance audit when i called them, doesn't mean find ex student for money we do not owe.... Still threaten to do legal recourse and when i leave them a message, no reply, call a department, i get push from one place to the other, called student service side, they say they currently can't check. Finance side say "Ya, u owe money" which i'm 100% i didn't, while they use threatening style and registered mail to ask me made payment in 10+days.

I remember they always like to collect money in class room last time and issue manual receipt. At that time if i did not make payment, i wont be able to take the module at all.

Letter still sign off my CEO somemore... This had caused be unable to work with my mind at ease.

Did you keep the receipts? If yes, go down and show them the receipts that you have fully paid.

Kaplan's time table is actually quite well-planned. There are hardly any replacements. Kaplan also allow time tables to be rescheduled on a case by case basis. It happened once to my class because the last class of that particular module happened to be on an exam date.

Many students wanted it to be rescheduled so that they can have enough rest and time to prepare for it.

Don't know about SMF since never studied there.

Don't know about SMF since I studied at Kaplan.

So here's my input. To me location is a plus for Kaplan since it's near my workplace. I can pop over to my school in a matter of minutes. Like wise to settle admin stuff like collection of textbooks and payment of school fees.

What I dislike about kaplan is only that you need to buy textbooks for the diploma program (not so for degree as it will be provided for Murdoch program.)

What I like is the admin and program managers are very efficient in settling your issues. I changed course from Business administration to Financial management (diploma) mid way and it was settle with minimum fuss and just a 1 time payment of 170+/-. The only hiccup that occurred was my name not appearing on the attendance list , but was rectified within the next lesson.

Half way through my course, the bridging system also changed, from 6 bridging modules (Basic Accounting , Basic Econs , Business environments , english etc , it was changed to 3 bridging modules (in foundation studies.)
But they only applied it to the next batch, so no changes to the current batch as communicated to the students in the email. There was some confusion about the bridging for some students that had remaining modules, but it was rectified in a week.

The thing is keep good contact with your program managers and always make it a point to attend the FIRST lesson of the module as that will be the briefing about the course where the lecturer will tell you their requirements , contact details and you can judge for yourself how strict this lecturer is.

Just sharing with your guys about my experience in Kaplan.

Also, I am joining the May intake of Murdoch in Accounting and Finance ( Dual Major )

Like that might as well those who have N'levels leave sec sch and just do diploma @ Kaplan. Market the course and dumbing down the requirement is just LOW of them.

In response to 11am_guy - I was also a N level student, and if not for their lowered requirement for entry to their diploma programs (with bridging modules of course) many people would not have been given a chance to pursue a higher education. And FYI N level does not means cannot study, not doing well in science or maths does not means we cannot 'pwn' a A level student in financial accounting and management subjects :s8:

Seriously, it is the Singapore Government & MOE fault to create this stupid education system & shortchange their citizen students.

Tell me NT GCE N & NA GCE N belong to which level of education in the world when Express/NA GCE O belong to Year 10 of education system in the world?

The only country that I know of is Malaysia which NA GCE N belong to Year 8 (Sec 3/Form 3) because their SPM/GCE O belong to Sec 5/Form 5 which is equal to Year 10 in the world.

So how come I don't know about NT GCE N?

Under the leadership of MOE & Singapore Government, ITE offer NT GCE N graduate or Sec 2 NA/Express school leavers can only enter Sec 3 Normal (NA) [General Education (GE) Programme].

So does this make NT GCE N equal to Year 7 since it belong to the same entries level as Sec 2 NA/Express school leavers (Equal to Malaysia Form 2).

Which make NT Sec 3 equal to Year 6(Form 1) , NT Sec 2 equal to Year 5 (Malaysia Standard 6 / Singapore Pri 6) & NT Sec 1 equal to Year (Malaysia Standard 5 / Singapore Pri 5)?

In this case, what are we studying in Pri 5 & 6 EM3 (Foundation) class when we are the same standard as our peer in Pri 4 when they proceed to Pri 5 EM1/EM2 (Standard) Class?

KNN! Only Singapore Government like MOE always make problems for their citizens.

So is this our fault when Singapore Government & MOE base on our 10 year old mindset to determine our competency to study secondary school education?

Given a chance to study NA & Express, I don't think NT calibre students will be too far off from NA & Express students. They may even get higher score too!

So again, Only Singapore Government like MOE always make problems for their citizens by teaching RIRO (Rubbish In Rubbish Out) giving the public the impression of NT or even NA GCE N graduates are Rubbish that guys like 11am_guy look down on us.

In response to 11am_guy - I was also a N level student, and if not for their lowered requirement for entry to their diploma programs (with bridging modules of course) many people would not have been given a chance to pursue a higher education. Well good to hear things are better now at SMf. It's up to the individual to go Kaplan or SMf. I'd understand that people go Kaplan coz of the branding. Doesn't mean anything right now cause they're not getting their sh*t together. It's always the popular choice due to branding and Kaplan is one of them. You can see what their targets are by their aggressive marketing. They're selling education programs like its a commodity. One worrying facts is that Kaplan allows N'level students into their diploma program vs all other pte sch including SMf which states that 4-5 O'level passes is the minimum for foundation cert and A'levels/Nitec for diploma. Like that might as well those who have N'levels leave sec sch and just do diploma @ Kaplan. Market the course and dumbing down the requirement is just LOW of them.

Lol, Kyoji, Relax man.

No bad feelings towards the government and to 11amguy.

In fact, after exposure to economics and other interesting subjects in my course of study (private , not government) , I actually appreciate our government more and now I am more supportive of some of their policies. Though I have to admit the foreigner part went a bit to fast and too many, haha.

I just want to point out that even though some of us make mistakes early in life, like for my case just simply too rebellious to listen to my mum and study hard. But luckily there are PEIs like Kaplan, MDIS etc that accepts basic qualifications like N levels, that make it possible for us to catch up on our peers.

Of course not saying a private degree cert can confirm get a good job , but it sure helps.

However I have bad feeling towards the government especially MOE.

We the students of EM3 have learn Science Subject & were given tests & exams at school level.

However we are shortchange by the government & MOE because they did not have a Science exam paper at PSLE (National) level for EM3 students.

Because we are short of 1 subject, it affect our score to enter Secondary School Stream.

The top EM3 student can only enter NA because total score will never hit the requirement for Express while average EM3 student can only go NT.

So government & MOE is discrimination & forcibly throw EM3 students to Normal stream. If not, why is there a needs to even learn a subject & given tests/exams at school level but not national level?

Haha..I can't change that. but on the overview, I still think our current government is making good progress on wages, population and infrastructure. Tons lots better then minimum wage, and all that bull coming from the oppositions. But education , I think more should be done to allow students to grow their potential instead of just throwing them into the mills of irrelevant subjects like science when what we really are interested in are things like management , accounts, economics and etc. Science simply doesn't fit anywhere to me.

Anyway, back to the subject of comparison between SMa and Kaplan.

Before I applied for a Diploma at Kaplan, I actually applied for the foundation studies at SMa (which had minimum requirements of N levels I believe.). But , after submitting all my documents , I waited for weeks and no calls came back to me regards to my application.

Right before I applied for Kaplan, I called them up and to my disgust, the course coordinator has resigned and didn't processed my application at all! And when I ask the guy over the line "by when can you confirm if I am admitted to you school?" , he told me end of today which is a very long today because that was the last I ever heard from him.

Being such a big screw up even before I enrolled, I seriously lost confidence in SMa and thus decided to enroll in Kaplan.

I can safely say I am happy thus far with their admin and line of communications (usually email)

The purpose of General Education is to cross train students with academic knowledge to prepare them to study in higher education or work in workforce which is the reason why they include subject(s) like science that you & I are not interested in.

However I feel that the education system & approach is wrong in Singapore. Everyone should be given a fair chance to learn the same General Education all the way to Year 10 Standard (Sec 4).

Singapore education approach is to 'score in exam' to compete with other graduates to get into a stream or/and a place in higher education which is the reason why our government declare our students/graduates 'cannot think out of the box' and 'fail to apply what they have learn in school' which make our market value lower compare to foreigners when we compete for jobs. So why are we still using 'score in exam' approach when Government & MOE should focus on 'learning approach' in order to think out of the box and able to apply what we have learn in school.

So I will recommend education system like Finland where everyone study the same General Education using learning approach. We should not be given a national exam in Sec 4 but are given the option to choice JC or Poly path for our post secondary education.

It is only ready to have 'score in exam' approach in post secondary education to compete for a place in our university because at that age we are all much mature to decide what is good for us. For example, we are able to decide to use 'score in exam' approach to compete for a place in our university or to use 'learning approach' to prepare ourselves to work in workforce.

Rome does not build in one day. When our Government & MOE is dare enough to take up the challenge of everyone having the same General Education (Pri 1 to Sec 4) then maybe we can move on to discuss other things such as every citizen can get a place in local university & can it work out without much impart on our workforce. A bit off topic, my thesis is about "The impact of human resource development on organization’s performance".

But education , I think more should be done to allow students to grow their potential instead of just throwing them into the mills of irrelevant subjects like science when what we really are interested in are things like management , accounts, economics and etc. Science simply doesn't fit anywhere to me.

1) Wages: Our government is making some progress on wages but is behind time & doing not enough because of the open market. Do you know that there are a lot of desperate professional foreigners want to step foot in Singapore & will to have basic salary of $2,000 for a degree graduate position with a S-Pass? Even if the salary requirement of S-Pass go up to $2,300 in very near future, the employer will pressure the desperate professional foreigner that there will be no or little increment of salary and the foreigner just have to downgrade to Work Permit or be replace by someone cheaper. So how low can you go for your expected salary?

2) Population & Infrastructure: I welcome out the idea of having more Population but Infrastructure must at least be 90% ready for the existing residents first & follow by new comers such building, houses for home, foreign worker hostels, healthcare, childcare, school, public transport, jobs, land & etc. Currently their practice is to build today flat for yesterday applicant which cause sky high price because under supply of flat & over demand of applicant. This example can be use for public transport, healthcare & etc. So if they are not ready for that, why keep opening the gate so big?

Haha..I can't change that. but on the overview, I still think our current government is making good progress on wages, population and infrastructure. Tons lots better then minimum wage, and all that bull coming from the oppositions.

Hi Guys.

Sorry if i didn't get my point across about N'level / O'level requirements earlier tactfully. Here my opinion on why schools like MDIS/Kaplan giving N'level students the same level of progression kinda worrying:

- For a N'Level student who don't make it to O'level it suggest that their basic academic skills are not up for standard. Thus i believe that if the were to start diploma together with a O'level graduate is kinda unfair.

-Unfair to both N'lvl/O'vls students. For O'lvl students who passed every subject with decent/fair grades it shows that they have a certain level of proficiency in terms of Eng/Math/sci/humans subject. They are ready to take on the next step (foundation studies/ diploma) while N'lvl students who had not undergone the rigours of O'lvls(let alone A's) its will be a lot of adjusting for them to do.

-One might ask why can't N'lvl students deserve an equal chance to pursue higher learning?
1st) I didnt meant that n'lvl students dont deserve that chance but they have to learn more in order to prepare them for the next step.

2nd) If you ask me,what do N'level students have to do before taking Diploma/Foundation certs is to go ITE.

Why ITE?
- ITE courses (nitec) mostly fills the gap between N's and O's. Things like A'maths, foundational Accounting, business studies and on top of that academic/office skills like how to use Excel/words or write a simple form essay.
- This is why i find it upsetting that MDIS/Kaplan allows fresh N'lvl students into their programme. You don't find this at SIM/PSB/SMF cause they jolly well know that a Nitec/Olevel cert is atleast the minimum for entry to their foundational program.
- Think about it, what if N'level students flock to these schools instead of excelling their N's>O's or nitec just because these schools open the floodgates?
-Yes quality will definitely drop! Why? Students from NA sec 4 will just opt out O'levels or do their N'levels badly

1) I will like to confirm that NT GCE N graduate is not incompetent but it is our government & MOE fault to set the public system for NT GCE N graduate to enter ITE for his/her Nitec course even if his/her score for NT GCE N is all grade 1(equal to A1).

2) If a GCE O graduate have good results to enter Poly/JC, who will want to enter a private school to get a qualification where there is a possible that employer or higher education school do not recognize it.

3) Base on world education standard, NA GCE N is equal to Form 3 in Malaysia (Year 8) & GCE O is equal to Form 5 in Malaysia (Year 10). Let treat NT GCE N & NA GCE N is the same. I agree that in this case, GCE N graduate is not in the same standard as GCE O graduate however how many GCE O graduate will choice to study private diploma? In this case, it is not sufficient to form a class with just GCE O graduate in business sense. This is the reason why private school accept GCE N graduate for private diploma courses. As for school like SIM, there are so many cash cow entering their diploma courses to enter their UniSIM courses which is the reason why they can afford to set high standard.

4) GCE O is equal to GCSE in UK National Qualifications Framework (NQF).
  • GCSE at grades D–G = UK NQF Level 1
  • GCSE at grades A*–C = UK NQF Level 2

Private Diploma belong to UK NQF Level 3 which is the same level as GCE A & National Certificate (equal to our NITEC) which is the reason why you can study a degree at 1st year. So now do you still think GCE N graduate is incompetent to study Private Diploma now?

5) Private Higher/Advanced Diploma belong to UK NQF Level 4 which is used to be the same level as Higher National Certificate (Higher Nitec) & Certificate of Higher Education (Exit Certificate after completed stage/year 1 of degree). However now Higher National Certificate belong to UK NQF Level 5 (Cannot consider to be Higher National Diploma or Diploma of Higher Education but same level). So no matter if it belong to Level 4 or 5, it allow one to get exemption in Year 1 only or Year 1 & 2 of the degree courses which is the reason why your Private Higher/Advanced Diploma allow you to study directly into Year 2 or 3 of a degree course. This is also a reason why some ITE graduates chose to study overseas university instead of distance learning mode in private education where private school consider NITEC & Higher NITEC the same as GCE N & O level in order to earn their money in private Diploma level. So do you still think it is fair for ITE graduate to start with studying private diploma now?

You see you might be getting this all wrong. You cant compare the educational framework from other countries like UK per verbatim. In australia for example; to enter uni you have to pass your Year 12. So what is year 12 equivalent in singapore?

- A'levels (full and depends on score)
- International Baccalaureate (high sch)
- Higher Nitec

Then there's something we categorise as post-secondary institutiion Vocational/polytechnic.

- Poly Diploma is similar to Associate's degree (other parts of the world like USA)
- Poly diploma ~= Tafe Diploma (Australia)
-In some course that offer advanced diploma, well they're like Polytechnic diplomas too.

These students who do really well here have the option to do top-up studies in uni.

So if you let the N'level students bypass Nitec/O'level theres an imbalance.I understand those who are really willing to study. How about those who's just rich and wanna waste time in private schools? I've personally known some people who are O'level/N'level leavers in private schools and guess what, they're lazy bunch of organism on the planet. Just cause their parents could afford to pay for private sch, they enrol (sometimes dont attend lectures/tute) and suddenly final wk come for exam tips or group presentation.

To be honest, i came from N's > O's and i dont see why N'level is hard to pass. You dont even need to study! It was only O's that i find hard to get a grasp of all the subject at once.

So i feel like private schools do have to maintain their standards you see. If not they're just an outlet for wishful thinkers who think they can go further in their academics by paying tons of money.

1) I believe that you know TAFE also offer Certificate courses that lead to degree & do not really needs to study a TAFE Diploma in order to study a degree course. So TAFE is not only like our Poly but ITE as well.

2) Just for your information that NITEC is also consider equivalent to Year 12 for Australia.

3) If you talk about Singapore Public Education System, then the ranking is there. PSLE(Foundation) -> PSLE(Standard) -> ISC -> NT GCE N -> NA GCE N -> GCE O -> Nitec -> Higher Nitec -> Poly Dip -> GCE A -> Degree.

4) However we are talking about alternative education which include distancing learning mode, on shore on campus, private school & etc. In this case, we will base on global education standard. Are you going to shout foul to universities that accept ITE graduates to their degree courses directly with some exemption? Then it is as good as I cry foul or question SIM GE-The University at Buffalo for lowering it standard for GCE O graduate who are incompetent to enter Bachelor of Science (Business Administration) and Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) courses without a GCE A, Poly Dip or equivalent.

5) Technically, both GCE N & O level graduates are Secondary School Graduate & they are allow them to study Post Secondary School Education. So they should be competent to study a Private Diploma since it is consider a NITEC level.

6) Your 4 years of NA education did not prepare much you for your GCE O in Sec 5 because there is a sudden increase of standard in Sec 5 which is the reason why you lose out compare to Express Students. To be honest, if your GCE N or GCE O result is good enough to enter Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP) or Polytechnic Diploma Programme, will you even consider Private Diploma Programme? If you want standard, Private School can set the same standard as Polytechnic but do you think you have what it take to enter Private Diploma courses? Private school is always out to earn money as first priority & to provide you an education is always the last priority. If is not sufficient to form a class with just GCE O graduate in business sense, private school will lower the entries standard to GCE N & ITE graduates. Unless everyone are willing to pay the same amount as onshore on campus degree for a private diploma then they will give you the entries standard which I doubt so.

7) I understand that some people who are O'level/N'level leavers in private schools and guess what, they're lazy bunch of organism on the planet. Just cause their parents could afford to pay for private sch, they enrol (sometimes dont attend lectures/tute) and suddenly final wk come for exam tips or group presentation. However did they pass their exam? If yes, why do you still study there when the reputation is bad since public like Employer & University will know about this? If no, as long as they do not graduate, they are 0 which mean the reputation is there for education standard. That is the reason why universities & schools consider mature students even if they do not have the qualification to give them as second chance for whatever reason why they cannot make it in their first chance.

That is why i chose to go on-campus after knowing first hand how those students are just lazy and demoralising to students like me who dont do well initially but want to improve. I'm less worried about the number of graduates too in SG, just that it hurts abit inside to see those students who goes around and say " aiyah i fail O'lvl/sec 4 NA, go Pte sch lah i heard Kaplan take in N'lvls". Taking it for granted man, i have to listen to it over and over again especially from youngsters these days.

Never mind about them cause if they take things for granted, they will have to learn it the hard way. At least, private school(s) is there to offer you & the rest a 2nd chance to have a private diploma & go on to study a degree by distance learning or on campus mode when public school close the door at us for full time studies.
