the japanese have so much seafood, they pretty much eat it any other way you can think of. There's even unagi softdrink....

most commonly crab is served as sashimi, sushi, hotpot ****, shabu shabu, grilled, or plain boiled and dipped in ponzu.

not entirely wrong.

There're 3 main type of crabs from hokkaido
suwai crab
taraba crab
hairy crab

The lunch buffet only serves suwai crab. I don't eat crabs so i don't know the difference, maybe the experts here can tell you more. As far as I know, this is the cheapest tokyo deal for crab buffet, or even hokkaido crab, bar none.

when I went to Sapporo last week (aug.22-26), I been eat at two big kani restaurant in Sapporo. I paid Jpy 14000-18000 just for a dish said 3 pcs of crab viz. king crab, hairy crab and queen crab. Indeed, after they bring over to the table, we awore that we were cheated, becasue on the dish, there were not 3 pcs of crab being served, hahaha..., tricky.
I had yesterday went to a super market, namely KURISHIMA SUPER, in nearby Sinjo Eki (kawasaki) and bought a tray of boiled king crab cost only Jpy1980, just less than 2000yen, for size those i had in Sapporo, really incredible. They even sell the live crab at same price. Infact I want to provide the picture of such bought king crab, but I dont know how to be?

In Sapporo, I recommend to all of travelers, if you wish to eat king crab, go to Nijo fish market, buy there and eat there, because mostly they sell bolied, cooked crabs, ready to eat, or you can take it back to your hotel room then silently enjoy your extra ordinary meal without anybody disturbing you, hehehe........ remember bargainning the price at the fish market 1kg at Jpy2000-3000
To be known, mostly the restaurant are buying cooked king crab imported from Russia, refrigerated, so, when you eat at th restaurant, rarely serve in hot condition, in contrast, always in cold!!

Live crabs (king) selling in Hokkaido for around 5000 yen (big ones) and up (eg Hakodate).

For crab fix in these places, we usually go to crab restaurants like Kani Doraku, Kani Honten etc. Their pricing is pretty standard.

Most of the restaurants will list down the price and some even the size. So got to be careful.

If I remember correctly, most of the crabs are cold or room temp. Probably after steaming, they are put into cold/iced water to cool down so that the meat is easier removed.
