Am planning a trip to SA in September. There seems to be a number of day trips and tour guides for safari at Krueger and the price range seems to vary significantly. Anyone got any experiences with these? I am thinking of doing a three day safari. Is it long enough?

I went to a private game reserve called Lion Sands. It was brilliant - nice and luxurious.

For the drives, it was on a long wheelbase land rover where they put 3 rows of seats on top. so you have 3 couples + 1 driver / tracker + 1 guide. Quite a cosy group and the land rover was completely open - no bars / windows. You get quite close to the animals - the lion walked by probably about 3 m away from the land rover.

The meals during the safari were also very good. One evening, they set up a camp fire at a clearing outside the resort and drove everyone there for a BBQ dinner. It was very good fun.

I've heard of others who joined tours in Singapore and their "safari" experience was buses with metal grills.... That's probably what you get with the cheapest option.

What's the cheapest option so to speak? I was quoted 8500 rand for a 3 day classic safari, land rover, airport pickup, chalet accoms, breakfast + dinner included.
