Lag? And ram compatible

Pc has been laggy these few days, just switching from program to program on my xp pc takes
15-20 seconds
I did registry cleaning and AV check but none of these seemed to help, I have a p5l 1394 motherboard with a core 2 e6600 and 1GB ram, what seems to be the problem?
And I was thinking of a GPU and RAM upgrade as well, can anyone recommend an upgrade compatible with my motherboard? Thanks

laggy only this few days?
I mean normally it is ram, but it seems like your problem is only recent.
Therefore, I would think it might be HDD

That platform is quite old. I also suspect its hdd.

Do a RAM test using Memtest. Do it for multiple passes (which will take hours) to pick up any potential random errors.
