Going to buy a laptop for my parents, who just want to use it for emails, web browsing etc. But I need it to last a long time (at least 5 years, preferably longer) so willing to spend more to get something that can last. Budget about 1K. Weight and battery life not an issue since it will be only used at home.

They are still using an ancient thinkpad with windows 7 that is really slow to load even basic websites.

Any reliable brands to recommend? Is 4GB RAM enough or need to get 8GB? Is it necessary to get 10th gen Intel CPU?

Difficult to say what will last. Best bet is to top up for a long warranty. Check out Dells website, they have up to 4 years warranty. I5/8gb ram/256gb SSD should be more than enough for casual use for the next 4 years.

Get extended warranty up to 5 years but only at Harvey Norman. Challenger Best Denki are up to 3 years. Dell is up to 4 years onsite. Lenovo can extend also i think.

There are many laptops/ tablets that can fit the usage patterns, but none can provide you with a guarantee of 5 years.

If you don't want to spend that much, basically what you need to do with the existing laptop is to replace it with an SSD. It is slow because of the slow hard drive.

Perhaps any proven brand entry level laptops with SSD. My 10 year old HP still running fine with SSD, good for old folks and they dun complain either.
