Am looking to buy a new laptop for my kid, who's going to study inforcomm at Poly. School recommending 1tb and 16 ram only.

Any recommendations? Am looking at 1k to 1.3k.

TIA

The schools normally offer better deals.

personally find it weird for school recommendation to mention ram and storage, both can be expanded by ourselves for many models, except those with soldered ram and storage

more important is to see the cpu and gpu [if dedicated], did school mention?

if really going by 16gb/1tb, u can search using the keywords in shopee mall or lazada mall

1 key consideration, avoid models which are too heavy, these laptops are meant to be brought to school regularly, personally have laptops which are 1kg and 1.4kg, really makes a difference

Lenovo iirc some time got good promo like 20-30% off, sometime it's been shared around in one of the thread.

Another alternative for that price is asus vivobook.

1TB probably more than enough unless you are doing many designing work. 16GB is great, but 32 would be better. Many ultra light laptop are using soldered RAM and not upgradable.

The poly didn't mention cpu and gpu. Should I be looking at i5 or i7 cpu?

Ryzen CPUs are much more energy efficient.

Intel CPUs won't be energy efficient until early 2025 when the newer CPUs are out.

Dedicated GPUs are also very power-hungry compared to integrated GPUs.

For mobile use, weight and energy efficiency are of very high importance.

Hmm... after reading your scenario, I realise, shouldn't you instead ask your kid, what laptop he/she wants and justify the reason to you??
After all, your kid is going to study INFOCOMM!!

I personally think your kid not fit for INFOCOMM if he/she can't even pick his/her own laptop properly. Should the budget bust your available savings, then put the excess cost as loan and make it a condition for your kid to work part time or do something online business to pay off the balance of the loan.

Consider Huawei laptops too.

The new Huawei Matebook D 16 (2024) is launching soon. Retail price S$1198.

Launch promo March 20-26 will get $100 off + $50 voucher. March 27 to April 30 get $100 off.

I'm using the 2022 model and it's really good. Downsides is just the battery life of 6 hours, and weight of 1.7kg which is alright considering lighter laptops will be even more expensive.
