Code builds can completely thrash an SSD's write cycle. And some sorce code bundles are crazy huge. Really still want an SSD?

Already my existing 1TB HDD which I use for compiling FOSS applications is more than 70% full.

And 8GB memory is insufficient, I have 16GB and the system still crosses over into /swap during the linking stage when building Chromium, Firefox or Libreoffice.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I'm a student so I probably won't be delving into extremely heavy workloads. I think around 500gb would be sufficient for my use case.

What kind of coding are you going to do?

Microcontroller stuff (eg. Arduino): i3 can liao, get whichever laptop suits you the most

Game programming/ app development : get 16gb ram for virtualization and sufficient processing power depending on what you're coding

Machine learning : cheap laptop +ssh into Google cloud or some remote desktop to do the heavy lifting

Hi all, I'm looking for laptop recommendations for programming in uni as well! Will be using Java most of the time; not interested in gaming. Looking at a 14" ultrabook that is considerably light and comes with good processor, decent storage (HDD + SSD), graphic card and display. Ofc, I'd prefer better specs :s13: Budget is $2.5k and below. I've considered Aftershock's customizable laptops as an option, but they're too heavy albeit the affordability :(

Foundational and intermediate-level Java at uni level never uses the GPU. Anything more than an iGPU is a waste of money.
