Hi! Does anyone have any recommendations for a school laptop with the following requirements:

- lightweight (less than 1.5kg)
- around 14” FHD
- doesn’t overheat easily
- preferably can last 3-4 years
- less than 2k (preferably around 1-1.5k)

I don’t use it for gaming, just mostly regular school work, browsing the internet, and watching movies and such. I’ve previously used Fujitsu Lifebook S Series. Any recommendations?

$2k is on the border of Latitude 74x0 and Thinkpad T4x0s territory. Check your school's laptop tender listing as they might be a genuinely good deal (e.g. X1 Carbon 5th gen @ $2k). I personally would only recommend enterprise grade laptops, but brand new, they're mostly out of your budget range. If you're willing to look at pre-owned, there'll be better value choices out there.

Asus Zenbooks are very glam looking machines, though they probably won't take the beatings and batterings the Latitude 7000 and Thinkpad T/X series can go through. HP is meh with their bloatware, website, QC and keyboard layout. Fujitsu/Toshiba/Panasonic/Sony, meh about warranty support.

An Ideapad is fine for a home use. For work and school? I'm still mad about it even though it's been 6 years...

The Macbook Air (lower spec) might be a good choice.

I was going to recommend Thinkpad, but your budget won't cut it.

And no, don't try to get an Ideapad.

ASUS might be okay, but it's barely under 6 hours in normal use.

Don't know about the rest so I will leave it to them/.

Urgh I hate Macbooks. No offense, just from personal exp.

I heard Thinkpad is more for businessmen, but I don’t think I need such a high end product for school. Why is Ideapad not ideal?

I’m actually looking at Ideapad 530S, Acer Swift 3, ASUS Vivobook S406UA

Also what are some brands to go for, and avoid? Is brand important?

Lately I brought a Ideapad 320, few things:

- Awful panel since it is not IPS panel
- Painful slow since it is using HDD.
- Very hot under load

530S looks decent since it is using SSD but the Lenovo LCD
to me isn't good.
That laptop I returned and buy a Dell G3 no issue with this.

Since you want something light maybe Asus Vivobook or
the new HP Envy x360 AMD Ryzen (No pricing or release date)

The AMD Ryzen mobile chip is not slow or hot. :s22:
It is the equivalent to Intel i7u with MX150 but one chip so not
two.

Since you want a laptop up to 3 years.
Err... I can only think of Dell as their lappy can upgrade warranty up to 5 years.

Like Dell XPS and etc. but not within your budget.

Thanks! I’ll check those models u mentioned.

Though I’m curious about your last few comments. Do those laptops you/I mentioned don’t last for 3 years? On average? I’m clueless about this because I’ve always used Fujitsu

Lucky I waited cuz at that time, Ryzen based Thinkpad
was unofficially announced but teased by AMD.
Yes KNN, it is really $800 currently for promo.

Good price, but at 9hour mobilemark 45WHr battery rating is already under the E480 by 44% (though also 45WHr) within the same ballpark as other models.

It's already hard to believe a ULV laptop going at 5W and 3.4W average power consumption. At abit past 2x on lowish brightness with fairly aggressive power management its still believable with with WiFi radio enabled.

As cheaper home/SMB laptop, great. But not for a mobile computer. Can be great if it does what you need it to and not over expect battery runtime. :)

This is not to fight Low Voltage, this Ryzen 5 can fight Intel Core i7 QMs
E480 come with crappy i3 yet more expensive than Ryzen 5

A more viable buy than those used thinkpads with ivybridge CPUs definitely, with current support
