Laptop freeze and lag

hi all!
just brought an asus gaming laptop last week!

Prior to install and boot SSD as my OS drive, the laptop 5400rpm HDD is really slow.. i hadnt install any games or what, and the laptop can have mini "freeze" and lag even when im just accessing folders, or surfing the net. HDD seems to be on high load etc.

Install a SSD drive 1 day later, and clean install of windows 8, with SSD as OS boot drive, the laptop is blazing fast! but then, when ever i tried to load things, or access files from my HDD, it still freeze and lags occasionally.

In all of ur professional opinion, is my HDD "bad" or something? shld i rma the HDD?

your laptop should be the problem as:

1) with the original HDD, it exhibit a problem.

2) with a new SSD HDD, it exhibit the similar problem.


we can in a way rule out that the harddisk is not the problem. It could be that the heatsink is not sitting properly and is being overheating thus giving you freezing and lag at certain times or could be other hardware/software issue.

my advice is to bring the original HDD(because its new and just incase) and your own SSD to the ASUS service centre(I saw your asus thread on storage) and tell them about it. Request for them to use SSD instead of HDD.

do note that some people claim that Asus may not call back when they are suppose to. If that happens try posting a thread(like you did) on the Asus section(http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/asus-ecustomer-service-center-336/) or pm Asus@SG about it.

erm sorry but with SSD boot up, everything is fast and smooth as butter!

Playing games etc, the perf is outstanding (for a laptop)

but before i installed my SSD, it is slow, 'freezing' and laggy.

Yes, out of box, the HDD is quiteee slow.. previously i was on SDD for my desktop, maybe i was quite pampered by the speed already..

but then the 5400rpm HDD will freeze and hang the new laptop occasionally, this i really cannot accept.. haha..

just wondering, would it be wise to like upgrade my HDD to a faster HDD, like a 7200rpm one, in hope to solve the issue once and for all, and avoid the possible lengthy RMA procedure?

probably will have a lengthy RMA procedure and chances are they will take your laptop too. I'm not too sure but perhaps you can drop a PM to Asus@SG

Well for storage its

1) your standard HDD (if your buying, try to get a 7200rpm one)
2) hybrid HDD with SSD cache (its in between a HDD and SSD as it uses its SSD about 32GB for cache. May not be as fast as SSD)
3) SSD (great speed and transfer rates but low space.)

If you know how to do storage management eg: documents/video/music on external/network drive then SSD could be viable for you. Then you can move around your laptop while its on since SSD don't have any moving parts, the SSD won't crash.

Uhm, HDD have longer seek time and rotational delay while compared to SSD, therefore you will experience the "lags", not to mentioned 5400rpm hdd spin at a lower speed.

Frankly to say the improvement to change your hdd to a 7200rpm drive is very minimal

For eg, my Xg 13 which was fitted with both 256gb msata ssd as boot drive and a 750gb WD scorpio black 7200rpm hdd as storage drive, there will always be a slight delay when access my file in the HDD, it become more prominent when you used to a ssd access speed.

Oh okay, i got ur pt too but ts mentioned of mini "freezes" which i more inclined to think of he already used to ssd access time on his desktop, thats why a 5400rpm hdd may seems to have mini freezes to him. Changing to a 7200rpm hdd will help but the delay will still be there...

Btw, ts, before visiting asus or changing ur hdd to a faster one.Why not try to scan ur hdd for any bad sector and also recommend u to reformat ur hdd if any os is being install on it previously...

Btw, on topic of rma ur hdd only. If the hdd is ur default internal drive of ur laptop, most brands will need u to send in ur laptops too, i know it coz i work in one but not Asus though..

but now, i had done a clean install of windows 8.1, everything seems sweet now and thanks for the advise on the minimum difference in 5400 vs 7200!
