I think that is an unfair comment on ripping off.
Do you get the following services when you buy from ebay?
1) Installation of keyboard ggf
2) Services done by qualified engineers
3) Guaranteed Warranty for the keyboard
4) Guaranteed Original keyboard
5) 100% comfirmation that it is the right keyboard. Note that certain same laptop models have different keyboard connectors. (This happens when the brand changes ODM of their motherboard in the middle of the projected market span of the laptop series)
6) 100% verification that the keyboard is faulty. There are cases that keyboard is not faulty, instead, the motherboard IC keyboard controller (northbridge) is faulty.
7) Free consultation as to whether the repair is worth it?
8) No repair no charges polices.
Not to forget a full complementary health check up on the whole unit to make sure there are no other problems.
We need to maintain a physical presence, hire qualified engineers to provide these services. From ebay it is just one to few man operations who are just trading. No services given.
Of course for the techies and the more adventurous, it is always better to get from ebay. ebay is cheaper most of the time, thus they always have their targeted group of customers.
Similar analogy, you can buy 2 slices of bread, 2 eggs + tea bag from NTUC at less than 70cents for breakfast, but many people go kopitiam, spent $2.5 for the same food, and there are still more people who goes Ya Kun to spend $4.5 for the SAME food again.
They are just targeting different market segments with people of different needs.
Another analogy, if you look into ipad manufacture cost, it is less than 30% of the retail price, in fact more if you are getting the 64GB models. But look, they throw in user experience, a good device for many people's needs. They need to maintain an upclass, qualified and trained premium reseller stores to sell their items. Consumers indirectly ends up paying for this experience in their apple stores. Just see how many Apple premium resellers are there in Orchard road belt. All apple sales person are sent to training and qualifications are given out. All those rental cost and trained sales person cost are all indirectly transferred to consumers.
If customers need services and advice, they come to us. If customer wants the cheapest item in the world, then buying through internet will be their best bet. Just different market segments and different needs only.
Our target is to sell at "Kopitiam prices" yet provide services matching to restaurants like "Ding Tai Feng".
My 2 cents.
