Hi everyone.
I am stucked between getting a laptop or desktop for gaming, and i need help
I currently do not have a desktop and my ultrabook seems to be failing.
I cant decide which is better for gaming in the long run.

I like gaming laptops because they are portable, but I'm more worried about durability because laptops or ultrabooks started giving me problems about 1 year into usage.
Also, i don't want to get a gaming laptop at 2k+ only to be unable to play new pc games in less than 2years.
Lastly, I definitely need at least a basic laptop for studying or future work as i am graduating soon.

Any IT experts or friendly users that can help me out?

Thanks to the replies so far.
I do need at least a basic laptop for my school work, so that means i have to get a laptop in addition to my gaming desktop.
On the other hand, if i do get a gaming laptop, then i don't have to get anything more and i can pour all my budget on just the gaming laptop.

The budget i am currently looking at is around 2k to 3k

If your school work only requires opening Microsoft Word / PowerPoint in class, just get a cheap basic HP Stream laptop or Chromebook or something for $350~~.
That's assuming you totally won't use ur laptop for gaming.

Then use the remaining to buy a PC.

Yes, definitely go for a desktop pc for your gaming needs. It's much easier and cheaper to replace components once they have become obsolete and cannot display the newest graphics anymore.

For your school pc: As long as you dont want to edit 4K videos, every 3 year old notebook should be enough to handle 90% of the everyday work.

You may check out the MSI GS30 with gaming dock, it's a new concept, using the desktop graphics card and easily upgrade your graphics card in the future :s8:

why not just get a basic laptop for your work, and then a gaming desktop?

Even if your laptop can run games perfectly, its not like its gaming capabilities are going to serve you in the workplace

build a powerful desktop for gaming and school work at home.

As for portability, ask yourself what you use most out of the laptop (without AC power)? If your answer is just school work (standard office desktop app), then just get a cheap but good low weight good battery life but non-gaming laptop.

Gaming laptop has very poor battery life.

Do you bring your laptop to school everyfay or once in a while?

If only once in a while(and using it at home mostly), you may consider a gaming laptop that has good cooling and use it on a laptop cooler.
That can help prolong the laptop service life.

I am looking for a gaming laptop too even though I will mainly using it at home because
1) Take up less space on my desk
2) Generate less heat (my room ventilation not very good)
3) Consume less power
4) Can be portable if needed

The downsides are
1) More expensive, less performance against same valued desktop
2) Not upgradable, most likely need to replace in 3 years time
3) Much smaller display

the CEE show got ASUS offered $2499 for G751JY
this laptop came with gtx980m, cheapest 17" gaming laptop at this range, imo.

Thanks for all the help so far.
I think I will just go for a gaming laptop, and I have the Asus ROG series in mind.( Alienware is probably out of options, considering the price and other problems.)
However, I heard that I can get a similar system at probably cheaper prices from Aftershock.
Any users of either both or one of the brands able to provide reviews?
Preferably listing all the problems that could/would surface from using the laptop as I really need a system that can last 3 years.

The ASUS ROG G751JT(17 inch 970m) was available at CEE Fair (and should be available at PC show this sat at similar price) for $1998 which is great value if you don't mind a "hybrid" harddisk and huge 4.8kg footprint (which is not portable at all IMO)

The MSI GE62 (15 inch 970m) was available at CEE Fair(and should be available at PC show this sat at similar price) for $2,199 which is middle ground between aesthetics and value.
It comes with with a 128SSD + 1TB HDD, the standard MSI stack (Steelseries kb etc) and a decently portable 2.4kg footprint

The Aftershock S-15 (15 inch 970m) which has similar specs to the MSI GE62 is available for $2185 with a 128SSD + 1TB HDD.
The 17 inch version S-17 is available for $2272 with 128SSD + 1TB HDD.

I am currently considering one of the 3 above GTX970m machines. Service for those 3 brands should be quite decent given the reviews I've read so far.
Should be able to last 3 years also though warranty I am not so sure.

Desktop for gaming simply because i can easily navigate it without any hassle and i can really feel the trill of playing, unlike laptop that, for me always has its limitations.
