Hi all,

Haven't been in the notebook scene for years now. Would like to have recommendations as above.

Main usage would be some light gaming (Dota, WoW, emulator games) and work (Excel,Word etc). Light weight would be a good plus

Would appreciate any comments/recommendations!

Thank you

i was going to say lightweight/cheap/gaming doesn't go together.

until i saw this
1.8kg for 15.6"/$900+/gtx1050

in this case, you forgo brand and reliability. at least this brand seems to have good reviews recently. the unibody design looks really slick too.

*disclaimer. this is not a recommendation to buy!*

1.8kg(15.6")/$900+/geForce mx130

pros: i5 10 gen, 512gb ssd, IPS panel
cons: 8gb ram, weak GPU but just enough for light gaming i suppose

reviews on other models in their stores look decent

MAIBENBEN Laptops XIAOMAI 6A 15.6 inch ADS Screen / Intel N4100 / NVIDIA MX250 2G Discrete Graphics / 8G RAM / 480G SSD / Windows 10

About $600 and has a dedicated GPU some more. Seems good?

Is it branded? The price seems expensive for the specs given.. think you can find laptops with GTX1660 super for $1.8-2k..

dont buy intel anymore. even the cheapest amd beat the i5.

Are you sure? You are comparing with older Intel generation? I know most review claim AMD PC has a fast graphic but not CPU. Battery life is still a weak area with AMD.

No need to compare. What you see is just older 3000 series. 4000 series changes everything, cause everything is essentially more core count in the department.

Intel 10th gen i5/i7 U series chip is stuck at 4 cores. AMD ryzen 5 U series comes in hexa cores with SMT. Ryzen 7 U series 8 cores with no SMT.

This 2 segment alone already chew off the entire i5/i7 U series segment.

Then AMD has H series processors. The R5 4600H which is a hexa core cpu that easily kills off any 10th gen i5 H series cpu which essentially a quad core chip. The 10th Gen intel i7 has hexa cores and the top i7 10875H and i9 10980HK is an 8 cores 16 threads. With a hefty power consumption and heat output. Many oems has to find ways on how to cool those chips down.

What AMD has is 7nm processing node. A much power efficient chip and output lesser heat. But in a laptop world, OEM dont have much interest into increasing the weight of the laptop. All they want is thin and light. And since intel cant offer better performance due to the heat output and throttling speed, OEM can use AMD as an advantage to produce slim and lighter laptops.

AMD not only delivers a smaller processing node and good power efficiency, they deliver better IPC. Given that Ryzen 4000 do not match Intel clockspeed of 5Ghz, they have improved IPC overall. Giving them at lower clocks but output better IPC as a Intel 5Ghz processor. To kill Intel further, because it is running cooler and power efficient, the boost clocks for AMD was able to sustain longer than Intel. Intel claiming 5Ghz is far from possible. Not unless OEM is able to cool it off as much as possible.

Go left go right, AMD has all corners, they even have yet to release Ryzen 3 for laptops. That will kill Intel totally for their Pentium/i3 line up that comes in dual cores only.

The only bad point is that, Intel is backing OEM a lot. There are more Intel laptops than AMD. Despite AMD has produced the best laptop cpus, it is all up to OEM to take in and make more AMD laptops. Else at the end of the day Intel will still have the biggest market share.

No, It was the review of new 5 and 7 series. Do not get confuse with benchmarks result vs actual application useage. This type of comparison is same in Handphone market MTK vs SD.

AMD has same design technique like MTK. Always use more cores in the chip to push good benchmark result. Problem is application (sometime even OS) may not fully make use of it.

7nm is not the only reason for power saving. The more important, is the code in the chip to do power management. Also not to forget, Intel is currently a company from design to manufacturing of CPU chip. AMD is not.

Conclusion is if you use a application multitasking a lot. AMD may be a better choice. Otherwise you just wasted the CPU capability.

This user has a fair comparison between the 2.

Again old benchmarks and this is a desktop application. The one we are comparing is a laptop cpu. 2 different segment.

Is not about multicores. As per mentioned IPC. Instructions per Clock. Many have already tested, the current Ryzen 4000 LAPTOP cpus have reached the amount of IPC same for SINGLE threaded performance. So to say. Look at cinebench results. It was able to deliver the same performance as intel. But when it comes to multi threaded workloads, the AMD takes the cake cause they offer 2 more cores. When you have the same Single threaded performance, the more amount of cores offered will be overall better.

Not unless your single threaded performance is poor, just like the benchmark you seen in forbes.

Yes you are right that not all applications can use that amount of cores. But AMD was able to provide a single threaded performance same as the current intel 10th gen. So naturally even on single threaded workload, they performs just as good as intel. But when it comes to multi threaded workload, intel is out of the game.

Lets compare if you really not convinced. Now i give you 8 cores AMD and 8 cores Intel.

R9 4900HS vs Intel i7 10875H

Now lets take a better view. 9th gen Intel power draw. This show how insane is intel needed so much to be cooled. Yet still not cool.

All these are relevant. And this i have taken 8 cores vs 8 cores. High powered laptop cpus.

Now bring back down to their U series. Which essentially it is still a win for AMD. Cause like ive mentioned. The benchmarks for workload. Whether you are doing normal work or multi threaded. The 4700U 8 cores were able to perform better than Intel i5/i7 U processors. Cause simply put. They have caught up with Intel IPC. And even if applications do not use more cores. They should perform the same level as their single threaded performance is the same.

I have a few Lenovo Thinkpad AMD processor. Yes, it run faster but also get too hot instantly and freeze at times. Overall, I would not consider AMD processor unless it can solve the heat issue.

Imagine getting a Ferrari that is fast but broke down once or twice every week. I will get a toyota which is slower but stable.

Which processor did they come with? My previous E485 wasn't too stable. The IdeaPad 5 I tried recently is rock solid. Think they improved significantly over the past 2 years.

Yes the older ones are hot. But the current 3000 and 4000 series isnt hot to begin with.
