Laser printer print quality question.

Hello everyone,

I would like to seek some opinions, comments from fellow forumers here on a problem that I am facing on my Brother laser printer (DCP-7040).

All the while the print quality was fine. When the toner ran out, I then changed the toner to a third party version to save cost. All was fine in the beginning, however, after that, a faint line (a line where there is not printing) begin to appear in the middle of the page in subsequent printouts. This line will disappear if I were to bring out the toner and shake it vigorously. However, the problem will appear again after some time (maybe after about 30 printouts).

The reason I am posting here is to get a further understanding to the problem so that I could make a decision either to:

1. Change the toner again.
2. Change the toner and drum.
3. Change the printer.

It is not my intention for me to go back to the seller. Toner was bought for some time as I do not print frequently. I just want to understand the problem so as to make an informed decision to the steps that I have consider as listed above.

Would appreciate all comments/suggestions.

u can try cleaning the drum by sliding across the drum , or get a new printer lor, now printer so cheap ma, a laser printer for brother is going for 148 , print scan copy, $52 for 1k for the toner , drum $32 10k.

Well, if I am replacing the printer, I would want to get a colour multi-function printer. For multi-function colour printers, the price range is about $500+. So, still trying to salvage what I can from the present printer.

shengwei1, currently, I use my multi function about once every 2 weeks. But I expect the usage to go up next year when my child goes to primary school. My current set is a monochrome set. I need print, scan, copy and wireless functions.

Ok you want color laser, u can try getting brother Mfc - 9330cdw thats is the goin for $598 , print scan copy wireless, network enabled, duplex print hahaha, if you want mono its going for $348 both have $50 voucher to redeem , hope that helps!

Not sure if you got the toner from me Anyway it seems like the primary problem is lack of powder inside your toner. A change of toner would solve it. To ensure good prints quality you could change your drum as well anyway this 2 add up cost is less than $200 anyway.

Thank you for your comments. Well, I have forgotten from who I got it from already.

Lack of powder? Hmmm... But I would like to add that the 'line' is always at the same location, even I have shaked the cartridge.

What do you think?

Your issue with the toner is common, you can just use a light tissue paper and gently wipe across the drum. What causes your issues are actually the cleaning blade in the drum unit couldn't clean away the waste toner properly. There is no issue with the printer so don't waste money to change one. But if you find it a hassle to clean you can just change a toner and your printer will be perfectly fine. If you need a toner you can look for me I'm doing exporting and locally distributing of my laser compactible toner cartridges.

spyboy5, thanks for your comments. Just that now I need to identify which is the 'drum' on the cartridge.
