I have been wearing glasses since 13, for about 20 years. The reason I did not try LASIK when I was younger was because of fear of being the 1 in 10000 with life-long side effects. Recently, a close friend went for his and I decided to dig deep and do a bit of research. I realised if I have LASIK now for my myopia and astigmatism, I may get to enjoy the benefit of no glasses (for the first time in my life) for 10 years tops, which then I will need reading glasses. I was pondering if I should wait till presbyopia set in before going for Monovision LASIK.

I do not read a lot of books, but my work requires me to stare at a computer screen. I do watch my usual dose of Netflix and Youtube on my iPad. Most of my reading are news article done on my iPhone. I play basketball occasionally, but I gym, run and swim regularly with my contact lenses on.

So I guess the next step is to go for an assessment if my corneal is thick enough for another LASIK in the future.

Yep. But do note, regression might occur, which means your distance might not be perfect if you want to see better detail. e.g residual of -0.50 degrees . But it is definitely better than wearing contacts all the time in the gym etc.
when you hit 40+ reading will be an issue so yeah , you have to wear reading glasses.
Regarding your contacts, i hope you wear your goggles and use daily contact lenses while swimming. Swimming with contact lenses on is a huge call for concern.

yep, so actually shouldn't do monovision. Cos by the time presbyopia set in (5 years later or more), perhaps there is also some form of regression in your distance vision and hence the residual degree will come in useful for the presbyopia. Imagine if you do monovision at this point in time, when presbyopia set in, what if there is some regression and your residual degree for the non-dominant eye becomes even higher? that would be double whammy.

my experience with EEC was great. SNEC could not do this op for me. so i found EEC after that. but i did not do lasik. i did icL instead due to thin corneas. since 2012, i had perfect eyesight.
My retina 4.67 which say is thin. Their iol per eye is a bit expensive 5800.

anyone who can share their experience with dry eyes after lasik? 42days after lasik, I still have dry eyes and it feels terrible. Instilling opticlear every hourly, vidisic gel 4x a day, ikervis nightly before sleep. I’m worried, but still hoping that this will pass soon and I don’t have to live with dry eyes for the rest of my life.

May I ask which centre did you go to?

If there is a difference of 300 degrees or more (3 diopters) between my two eyes, I can use Medisave to pay for Lasik right? Mine is like 500 degree difference.

If so, only government hospital can do Lasik with Medisave or those private ones like Shinigawa also can?

Read online that there is a chance that lasik effects will wear off when we get older, is it true and if so, is the price worth it for the duration it can last me for? I play sports quite often so daily contact lenses are inconvenient (plus I don’t like to wash my contacts so I don’t use monthly)

Thanks for the reply. Actually i was fine wearing contact lenses for decades. But recently, could not tolerate monthly lenses anymore and could only wear dailies, which cost around $3.60 a day. Still havent decided whether to do lasik/smile/icl or just continue with dailies.

Hi, just wondering if you’ve made your decision and how did you decide? As i’m Facing the same problem now

I have not decided haha. What started my intensive research on lasik was when i thought i could not tolerate any form of contact lenses anymore as i had changed 3 different brands of monthly and biweekly contacts. I told myself that if dailies also did not work, i will do lasik as i was so used to specs-less living with 23 yrs of contacts wearing. I do not detest contacts nor specs. I do not mind wearing specs maybe 2-3 days a week but if i have to wear it 7 days a week because contacts do not work for me anymore, i will definitely do lasik. Interestingly, in the midst of my lasik research, i ordered dailies to try and they work for me! V comfortable, just v costly!

Actually, even the “safest” PRK/ epi-lasik and SMILE have reported cases of corneal ectasia. I am rather risk adverse so.....

yes but the cost of lenses over the years will be more than the surgery itself.
