Latest SSD vs previous generation > 2012/13 models

Hi,

im looking to upgrade my SSD to the current generation model.

currently, i'm using a Samsung 840 Pro SSD, 256gb, and looking towards getting the 850 Evo or Pro 512GB.

was looking around and comparison specs between this gen and last gen's specs and surprisingly, the r/w and Iops speeds to not defer much.

has there been any improvement in terms of SSD technology for SATA based SSds?

i cant go M2 or PCI based SSDs as my mobo is pretty old.

I agree that there is no point to upgrade since the benefits of the new SSDs cannot be felt in our day to day usage. Your existing SSD may have too little storage space for PS4 considering that the games bought online takes up massive amount of space.

False. TS uses 2-bit MLC 840 pro.

The issue is limited to 3-bit planar MLC (TLC) drives and it stems from voltage issues through NAND degradation and decreased reliability from moving to a smaller node. Those were limited to original TLC 840 and 840 EVO (840 TLC but with SLC cache).

read speed in real world environment is minimal

only when you use write speed then you can feel the difference i.e video rendering etc

the two main advancements in my opinion are the same thingsd we see in every technology regarding storage.

They made them faster, and they made them cheaper.

They are also looking into making 2TB and above capacity drives in a single drive.

Where have we seen this before? HDD technology. Samething, Just with SSDs. What have we learnt from HDDs in the past? Buy by capacity and reliability and price. Go first for a capacity nyou require, then go for a reputable brand (currently most of the mainstream market does OK) and the best bargain you can get it for.

I think SSDs really only show up when you experience heavy file transfer. Like check out how or why Linus was willing to buy a whole stack of SSDs for his server in the LTT office. Might not be super closely related but still a good representation of how or why people upgrade or buy new SSDs.

And then there's nvme. That prodigial child that no one really understands right now.

Well erm there are a few things in play here...

1) SATA interface is limited to around 500MB+/s
2) People like to compare cheaper SSD of today vs expensive SSD of yesterday. Just because it is bigger and newer doesn't mean it is faster.
3) HDD vs SSD the difference isn't that obvious to begin with. Now take that difference and divide by ten for the difference between faster and slower SSD.

That occurs only on 840 Evo using TLC. TS using 840 Pro which is MLC. 840 Pro is still one of the best SSD today.

Only the 840 Evo was affected. 850 EVO had corrected it.

As far as I know, Samsung release patches for both 840 pro & evo..

Better check that you have the latest
