Leap Motion - Motion Control Done Right (US$70)

This is not very new but I came across it a few days back and am excited about it. This is basically a device that can very accurately capture movement and translate it without the usual stuttering.

This is a demo by the creator himself.

The company is called Leap Motion and the product is called Leap. It works on Windows and is already at the end stage of production.

Reviews are very very positive. It's possibly the best motion control hardware available and for cheap. Pre orders are out at US$70 and they ship to Singapore.

Considering Windows 8 metro UI, I'm thinking of purchasing this so I can just wave my hands and control my PC minority report style. That used to be a joke. This time it seems very possible and affordable.

It runs on both Windows and Mac and is a standard HID. There is a lot of dev interest in this as well.

Wonder how do you play games on this..doubt many games actually comes with support for this type of devices.

I hope NOBODY buys them. Let them be independent and develop for ALL platforms. Having a HID locked to a single platform is bad.

I'm planning to buy as well. Expected shipping is Dec or Jan. Card will be charged only when item ships.

No doubt it is very cool but better still it is practical and affordable. Considering the way tech is moving, this is coming in at the right time as well. Touch screen monitors are not the right thing for most people because you have to lean forward to touch a huge screen (unless you have super long hands). This fixes it (practical) and has many other case use scenarios (potential).

Many cool things don't last because it goes against human nature or is just unreliable, but this ticks all the checkboxes.

IMO, there's a rational reason to be genuinely excited about this.

I don't see it as a replacement for the mouse and keyboard. I see it as an addon. A third peripheral.

So for me, when I want to sit back and watch movies or just use the touch orientated Metro UI (with simple tablet-ish apps), I will use this. This is a 'lean-back' scenario.

When I'm doing serious work or gaming, obviously mouse and keyboard. Heh. 'lean-forward' case.

The only thing that can replace the mouse and keyboard is something that can outperform hand-eye coordination.

Not launched yet. Dec 2012, Jan 2013. So it's just preorder, they do ship here though.

If you look at their preorder, there is no discount buying in bulk (max 7 also same price/ea). Only thing saved is shipping fee of US$12.

If you see their marketing video, there's a FPS game being played via Leap. Not sure how accurate that can be. Sensitivity issues in FPS is a big game changer. And that is a MARKETING video.

But for daily use of Windows/Mac interface, browsing, etc. It will work well no doubt. Already demonstrated.

i only need to know one thing before i pre order it. can it do left and right click? as from the first video shown, he is using his mouse to do those action.

None of us will know until it is demo-ed or purchased. Judging by the versatility and precision of this device, I'm pretty certain that can be done. Just get the software to recognize a finger curl (or a push, etc gesture) as a click and whether left or right by the direction it is pointed.
