Xpertvision 9550 DDR2 $126 if looking for new. Otherwise can go for 9600Pro or 9600XT 2nd hand as they are going for less than $100 nowadays.

Avoid the XFX newly released 5200, 5500 and Mx 4000.

I learnt by watching how my friend fix my rig. After that, I started to upgrade by myself (change motherboards 3 times already). Nowadays, it is very easy to fix up, compare to 10 years ago. Bottomline, it is not a difficult skill to pick up.

I've always told people that assembling a rig isn't a hard thing to learn. It's picking the right combination of parts and knowing what to do when things go wrong that's hard.

If I have to upgrade my motherboard again, it will be another mATX. Love those compact motherboard. Save space and the low cost of the m/b as well.
