.......no rules....but normally we go by hira of the kanji....romaji is confusing once u get used to hira/kata...

It's just that "ko" is one word and "izumi" is another word. However, some instructions stated that "i" should be voiceless after a vowel. Kind of confusing.

sry, i made some typing error...look at my edited post. 'i' is not voiceless. But pronounced linked with Ko. So it's a straight koizumi. Dun worry about the sounds. The more u speak the more natural it will become.

For me, I have just learnt the ga gi gu ge go.....except pa pi pu pe po.

And I find that the sound is quite similar. E.G. I find the sound su & zu quite similar, esp when talking.

I have made a mistake in thinking that water is misu when it should be mizu.

How can I overcome this problem?

i guess u try to enphasize the Z in zu?
its kinda like a mix of ju n zu.. but with more on the Z.. uhhh.. dunno how to explain..

with more practices it shd be ok i guess, n listen to the way your teach pronouces n try to mimic her.

n i dun think theres such advance dictionaries out there yet rite...?

zu is pronounced more towards chi in mandarin as in 支 whras su is more towards si 思 in mandarin....urm...u get wat i mean? kinda hard to explain by words...

ohayo! 1st, i'd like to say i love this thread, except that this laptop doesn't have jap language installed on xp but it's still fun reading all the interesting vocab in romaji.

i'd like some advice on how i should go about continuing with my jap. i took 1 year of jap in univ (i think that gives me up to jlpt4), then i started on intermediate 1 at bunka, but i found that course too easy, and halfway through i stopped going because i'm on mc (that's why i'm here early in the morning, i'm not skiving off work). my friend suggests going jcs next year, and she wants to go for the intermediate course, while i think i might want to pia for advanced 1, because i'm still on mc and i borrowed my friend's minna no nihongo 2 and plan to read through all of that on my own. do they have placement tests at jcs?

i'm not worried about my grammar, but i'm especially weak on conversation. I caught up with all 96 episodes of bleach through my long mc, and i think that somehow should have helped with my listening (haha excuses for watching anime), but it would be cool if there's a study group or something, where we can converse and practice the language, and i can go 'kisama...' and 'bakamono!'

so is it physically possible to gather an interested group of people or if u guys already done so, can i join in?

Really? Until now, I am still learning the present tense. Haven't gone to past tense yet. Same goes to Kanji.

??? well, different institutions has different learning methods. For mine, vocab was pretty much left on our own (although there's 'spelling' every wk), first lesson already learn about the 'wa' particle and the concept of past/present tense. But the lesson wud be repeated 2 or 3 times until everyone is veri familiar with the concepts.

anyway, past tense is nuthin much. Just add deshi ta or datta or ta..

masu - mashi ta
masen - masen deshi ta
desu - deshi ta
dewa arimasen - dewa arimasen deshi ta (dewa = ja, arimasen = nai: dewa nai (or dewa nakatta for past tense) /ja arimasen (or ja arimasen deshi ta for past tense)= semi formal, ja nai (or ja nakatta for past tense) = informal/impolite)

erm...the rest once u learnt na-ajective(na=datta), i-adjective (i=katta), nai-form (which basically just follows i-adjective rule), it's pretty straight forward and automatic, nutin confusing.

my old textbook started teaching masen, mashi ta and masen deshi ta at about the 4th lesson, then adjectives started appearing in the 8th lesson. as for kanji, depends on the school. when i learnt, they introduced kanji together with the new vocab, but at bunka, i know they don't cover kanji at all in elementary, and only start in intermediate, so u get better drilled in hiragana.

i guess u'll just have to revise whatever material u've been given faithfully and wait for the rest to come patiently. there'll come a time when u'll be overwhelmed by the vocab and new stuff, and u'll be glad u started off well.

oh well, i'm skeptical about forming a study group. basically i don't feel like wasting $$ on classes now that i have a good textbook i can follow well, that's why i wanted like a once a week thingy to force myself to read the stuff. but doesn't seem like there's enough people, and time venue etc also difficult to arrange...
