Qn: how to translate "pls give me some water" or "may I hv some water" ?

Ans:

romaji = mizu o kudasai
hiragana = みず を ください
kanji = 水 を 下さい

Think shd b like this bah, I hardly ask 4 water... Pros, correct hor ?

When in doubt, always simplify the original sentence to something u already r familiar with.

"AS it is cold, please close the window"


=> "Because it is cold, please close the window"

or

=> "Since it is cold, please close the window"


From a translation and logical point of view,
All 1st half of the 3 sentences describes a situation that is a problem [ or rather a reason ], and the 2nd half describes the action to provide a solution to that problem.

Now I am sure u know the Japanese words to the words that are substituted here. The idea here is not every english sentences has it's exact equivalent in Japanese, not as simple as 1 for 1 exact meaning [ or any other translation between 2 other languages ], sometimes u hv to make do with a close approximation.

Ah! In this case, you can use ~から or ～ので

寒いですから、まどをしめてください

寒いですので、まどをしめてください

As it is cold, please close the window.

English we have IELTS(British Council or RELC) or TOEFL being the standard.. Japanese has JLPT.. so which learning centre is more prefered?

Hi, i haven't been to the one at JAS (Japanese Association of Singapore/Adam Road), but i know they use Japanese for Busy People as a textbook.

Personally, i feel Japanese for Busy People is really a book for busy people. Some of the important grammar points that you need to know are not covered.

I would strongly suggest you go for Ikoma or Bunka instead.

Currently my individual class at Bunka also uses Japanese for Busy People, after finishing another previous textbk. If it is used as basic textbk, strictly covering the contents of the textbk, of course it is definitely not enough. But in the hands of a master, it could be different however...

personally i would not put the conjunction at the beginning of the english sentence. but like u said, the important thing is for the meaning of th entire sentence or paragraph to be translated accurately, rather than individual words. sometimes in short sentences it doesnt make a difference, but in longer sentences or paragraphs the translation becomes crucial.

so it would be something like "it is cold, so please close the window"

not to say that your translations are wrong, they are correct since the meaning is roughly the same. but this is just the way i like to translate it because it seems a more convenient way to do it when you start dealing with monstrously long translations

the conjunction implies the degree of causality.

like for example,
1. Aて　B。
2. Aので　B。
3. Aから　B。

in which A is the action or cause, and B is the conclusion or result, in increasing degrees of causality.

there is no strict definition of what the conjunction should be. sometimes it could be different depending on the complexity of A.

don't worry about your english not being that good, nobody's perfect applying english intuitively may be mean that you are good or bad, depends on how you look at it. just remember that rules are rules, so stick to grammar rules in whatever language you use and don't mangle the language.

Trying to highlight using a simple one for one example since the person asking seems to hv problems in both languages, to aid faster understanding.

The real challenge comes when attempting to do real time interpreting, trying to catch the meaning and speaking the other language [ either listening to english then speak japanese or the other way round ], at that point probably only the best speakers could take care of the conjuctions too, considering the level of strain suffered just trying to get main sentences and meaning correct.

Translating from paper or reading is not so hard for most of those who reach a certain level since the response time needed is much less demanding, and more time to check thoroughly in comparison...
