I guess you are not at intermediate level yet (N4), that's why u ask this question. This will be taught in N4 syllabus.

Sometimes I can't tell whether there is really a difference between how a kanji is written in Chinese and Japanese, or it's just due to the computer font used.

Looks like knowing Chinese can be both a good and bad thing; on one hand it's much easier to remember the meaning for kanji but on the other, have to learn to differentiate subtle differences in the writing.

True...Sometimes the stroke order is different or have extra/missing strokes and we have to relearn the whole kanji.
One example of a kanji which is slightly different :
歩(in Japanese)
步(in Chinese)
You can see how in Japanese, there is one extra small stroke. I think the 2nd one might be able to be used in Japanese but I'm not sure.

hello everyone, i took up e1 class with bunka but currently im v confused with the verbs n particles. im afraid i'll struggle during e2 lessons. is there any self help books relevant for me to read up on? minna no nihongo seems gd but i can't seem to find the relevant download link to check it out. anyone has the pdf or the link can PM me? Thanks alot! my aim is to study jap until minimum Int2 and head off to F&e white xmas 2012 trip to nihon~

Had a student who took Intensive class at Bunka, in the end tell me, "Sensei, i think i rather stick with you, i don't feel like going for classes at Bunka.."

Not trying to say Bunka is not good. I have friends who came out from there and able to converse/write well...IMHO, Bunka is good if you have a lot of time to do self study... but definitely not for those who don't have time to do revision..

I agree. I guess the reason i found elementary easy was because I had lots of time to revise when I was taking the intensive course. Afterall, i had 5 months of hols Intensive classes at Bunka are not recommended unless you really have a lot of time on hand.

why don't want to take N4?

coz 1 year never touch jap unless you count anime and songs and was freakingly busy with school and I think i might not do as well if I take N4 straight away.

Well I hope to take it next yr though so guess should start studying soon

hey i browsed through some books and I realised some of the books used a weird sentence format that I have yet to see. Can someone tell me what is the difference?
Eg : どうして学校をやすんだんですか(saw in book)
どうして学校をやすみますか (taught)

i would believe it to be this case:

どうして学校をやすんだんですか --> this is less formal (in cases such as a student asking another student/friend why he/she hadn't turn up for school. could be argued as more conversational too) the "だん" is a short form of "だの" which indicates a form of slight desperation in a sense that the asker really wants to know the reason why the person did not come to school.

どうして学校をやすみますか --> this is a little formal (usually found in cases where a teacher would question a student's reason(s) for not turning up from class). similiarly the "の" can also be added to the sentence to induce the "burning desire" to know the reasons the students has for failing to attend class.
