Check with JCS most people would have received it by the end of this week.

lI'm looking at JCS now. Any review? Duno if the intensive course would be too tedious for me. I'm serving army doing clerical work in Ministry of Defence located at Bukit Timah.

Would appreciate if someone who's from bunka, Pyaess and JCS can share more insight?

hi i'm a student from pyaess.currently serving the ns too. apparently i've studied there for about 4 years or so. with occasional pauses and breaks. i'm currently taking jlpt level 2 this year.

it came across to me once whether i should switch to jcs or other jap schools. i asked my classmates who are working adults. they claimed that the reason why they choose pyaess is because this school doesn't stress the students by giving them tests/exams to proceed to higher levels. indeed even if i didn't pass level 2 this year, i still can proceed on to level 1 class next year. i think their policy is that as long you can catch up with what the teacher is saying and face not much difficulty, they don't really have an issue with your qualifications.

i think overall its subjective to your style of studying, whether you need someone to push you to study on or rather at your own pace.

all the best for your nihongo.

That must be because you registered at JCS. Then you should have said so in the first place. Most of the others who registered through other schools had their vouchers sent to them by mail.

Learning Japanese: Dictionaries for sale

Hi guys,

I hope you pardon me for purchasing an advertisment here.

I thought it might be appropriate since they are dictionaries for learning japanese.

They are:

sanseido’s concise dictionary of katakana words
3rd edition 2005
55,200 entries, 1,415 pages
978-4-385-11060-3
$65.10 * 27% ≈ $48.00
Entries are in katakana followed by there English spelling. Explanation are in Japanese.

kenkyusha’s New College Japanese-English Dictionary
5th edition 2002
18,700 entries, 2,048 pages
978-4-767-42058-5
$76.10 * 27% ≈ $56.00
Entries are in hiragana follow by their kanji characters. Explanations are given both in Japanese and English. The Japanese explanations come first. There are also examples of usage through short sentences.

I bought the books 11 months ago but has used them for a few searches only because I did not study Japanese for that period of time. I was occupied with my studies, family affairs and personal affairs to the extend that I cannot afford time to study Japanese.

As I have only done a few searches with the dictionaries, they remain in their pristine condition and are good as new as the ones now available at kinokuniya.

The prices are kinokuniya's current pricing.

They are indeed good as new with absolutely no damages. If you find a damaged page, I will sell it to you with a 40% discount.

You can visit amazon.co.jp and search for pictures and information using the ISBN given above.

Please PM me for inquires and deals.

Yours sincerely

hi iloveir,

I used to study at Bunka Language and they have a systematic approach.

Their systematic approach is patented.

They starts with alphabets to grammar. And in the midst of these lessons, there are inserts of japanes culture and use of the language in scenarios.

It is interesting as the teachers prepare the inserts themselves.

Their teachers are Japanese that flow to Singapore to teach. Their contracts are yearly.

I do not know if they are still using this method so give them a call and enquiry.

If Bunka language school isn't suitable, give a call to several language schools and enquiry on their teaching methods. From there, choose one that interest you.

If learning Japanese isn't fun and interesting, where's the kick right?

Btw, can you consider my dictionaries for sale, please?

They are Japanese-English dictionary and a katakana dictionary.

Do a search in this thread with the keyword "dictionary". Ya find the details

yours sincerely

Errrmmm... Just to clarify, I don't think Bunka's teachers flew specially to Singapore just to teach. They are simply Japanese who are in Singapore and looking for a job. Anyway, Bunka is not the only school with native Japanese teachers.

I've heard a recent mass exodus of teachers caused their teaching standards to plunge. Wonder if it has stabilised yet. In any case wouldn't join them so soon too.

HI. Just to make some inquiries about JCS because I am considering to register for the japanese classes for this coming intake.

Does anyone know how big is the class in JCS? 20, 30, 40? From what I read from the threads in this forum, it was mentioned that because the class is so big, there is practically no conversation in the class? Is it true? If so, I might have to reconsider my options.

How about the japanese teachers in JCS? Are they good?

Please advise. Thanks

jcs the class size is 30 i guess?
i not so sure, nvr go count.
as for conversation, quite limited loh.
if u get to speak up, its becoz they teacher ask u to make sentences.
den pace is do-able.
would be suitable if u dont haf much time to revise on a regular basis.

Not really recent actually. The mass exodus was like 2-3 years back. Think at least 5-6 teachers up and left then. They have since been replaced already. I heard from friends that at least 2 of those replacements are pretty ok but don't have contacts who studied under the other new teachers.

I was with JCS (Intermediate) from May to Nov this year. What others said about JCS is pretty true. Class size is big, about 30+ at the beginning of the year. As it progress to Term 2 and 3, guess the class size will strink to about 20+. But this also depends on which level you are registering in, Class size is big for Elementary & Intermediate. For Advanced and above, guess they have fewer classes and students.

Yes, they do focus more on grammar. So if you are a beginner in jap, JCS is quite a good choice to build up your grammar foundation. Conversation is really limited. Hardly get to speak unless teacher asked the whole class to read/repeat the example grammar sentences. Another chance is when you teacher asked you to make sentences and she asked you for answers. I only studied in Yonekura Sensei's class and I can say that I like her teaching method very much.

Which is why for next year, I'm joining Ikoma (hoping will get more speaking opportunities) and at the same time, I'll remain in JCS to further strength myself on advanced grammar.

Hope this helps. :)

hi everyone! first time posting in this thread. :)

i just finished one sem of jap lessons in nus and i'm wondering if i should continue next sem. we're being 'trained' to speak formally (teacher will promptly correct you if you forgot your 'desu's and stuff). are the private japanese language schools outside like this as well? 'cos i felt that learning informal speech is important too.

anyway, this is due to a recent incident. i was studying my jap on the train one day when this jap guy (tourist?) suddenly spoke to me. i could tell that he was using informal speech but i couldn't figure out what he was trying to say. i only understood what he was trying to ask me when he started using sign language and inserting english words. ._.
