I have been studying Japanese Language for about three years, but just joined Can sensei's conversation class this year. I enjoy going for lesson every week as sensei's class is never boring.

Besides learning from notes, we get to learn through dramas, songs and games in class. Through sensei I get to know/ understand alot of things that I think I will never get to learn in Japanese school.

As class size is small, sensei is able to focus on each and every student, and will personally guide the weaker student to ensure that they are not leave behind. Not only that, sensei is very patient with student and is always there to help students to correct their mistakes made even after lesson. He will also give advices / suggestions on ways to improve the student's Japanese. Learning under Can sensei is not as stressful as learning in Japanese School and I feel that I am able to absorb more and better.

Before making my mind to join sensei's class, I actually did hesitated and doubted his ability in teaching Japanese as sensei is a Singaporean afterall. When I attended his first lesson, I am shocked and impressed by his fluent Japanese and the knowledge he have related to Japan. I feel that it is hard for a foreigner to teach Japanese (as language is not by memorizing standard answers), but I am convinced that Can sensei is able to teach well as he never fail to answer all my questions asked during lesson. He is also a humble teacher as he will ask the student to review the lesson and will try his best to improve the lesson and make every lesson interesting.

Good evening everyone,

Today, i would like to talk about “Ohayou gozaimasu”, a greeting that everyone of you use.

As you all know, The English translation of “Ohayou gozaimasu” is good morning. But do you all know that you can only use it up to 9.59am?
If you look at this link, you would see that this question is often asked.

NHK Broadcast Culture Research Centre did a public poll asking the performers that appeared on TV if they mind what time “Ohayou gozaimasu” is used.
You can see the result from here

Actually, it’s said that from 10am, “Konnichiwa” is said. From the sunrise, just before the sun crosses the meridian, you would say “Ohayou gozaimasu”. After 5pm (1700hrs), you will say “Konbanwa”. “Ohayou gozaimasu” is the polite style of “hayai (fast)”!

The next time, when it’s 10am, don’t use “Ohayou gozaimasu”, use “Konnichiwa”

I am done for now, have a good week ahead! (^_^)

Watch more dramas, animes and try to mimic what they say, listen to more songs.

Most importantly, u need the courage to speak up. Don't be afraid to make mistakes.

Having lurked in this forum for a very long time, I surface occasionally to state my view on some issues. Btw, dimitri_can and I go back to 2006 when I first met him at a Japanese Meetup event where he has started studying Japanese.

I think we should define what kind of speaking mirukuboi wants to improve. From his post, I think he may need to work on his foundation. Thus, I would like to suggest that he take a look at "You can damage your English by writing and speaking" (yyy.antimoon.com/how/mistakes-damage.htm - note: my post count is low so I can't post URLs, so please substitute www for yyy). Although it talks about English, it is applicable to any foreign language.

The website is created by 2 Polish guys who in their own words "We are two guys who learned to speak English impressively well (better than most people with English degrees and almost as well as native speakers) in less than 3 years."

Just my 2 cents :)

Has anyone been taught by Bessho sensei, Takahashi sensei or Onishi sensei at Ikoma? Who will you recommend for a beginner like me?

I was under bessho sensei for a term. Then switched class to another sensei. I don't know about the other two. I'm not sure how important a sensei is to a beginner, but I didn't feel any difference between my two senseis because the syllabus is fixed and their teaching methods are same. Some friends at ikoma who are doing higher levels say that many of the beginner series senseis are new. (Meaning to say doesn't really matter who). In fact my current sensei is just here teaching for a short period before she heads back to Japan.

Having said that, I enjoyed my classes very much. Although I wished ikoma teaches the casual form alongside the polite form like that of bunka. And not until the end of 4 terms.
