Yup, to complement my classes for me to practice more or helping me understand easier.

I recommend these books for self study for N5~N4 (for my students).

Thanks for the recommendation.

The green book: Japanese for Busy People I, get the Kana vers?

:D

I would recommend the kana version so as to familiarise the japanese script rather than falling back on english characters.

I assume you know how to read / write japanese script. If not, start to learn to read / write proficiently before getting the book.

Good Luck :D

I have started taking elementary classes at Hougang too (near my house :s13:).

But just wondering, based on normal experience, until which level will one be able to converse normal, daily topics with Japanese? Also, when it comes to the elder Japanese, would it be more challenging?

(edit: what I mean is, I don't need to be able to read Asahi Shimbun and talking cheem topics, but daily stuff you do with your parents)

How do you define normal, daily topics?
do you mean the daily stuff you do with your parents?

I know this would be the likely question. Things like being able to describe your day, the weather, your feelings, your job, health.

I know JLPT has a description for each of the levels, but I would like to find out in real life terms, at which level would someone feel comfortable interacting with native adult and especially elderly.

The mileage varies for each and everyone. I am in my sixth year of study for once a week class. And I have classmates that are unable to even hold a proper casual conversation. For myself I think it took me 3 to 4 years.

I would say from my point of view in grammar context, a very high command of JLPT level N3 grammar would be the bare minimum for me. Note that this done not include vocabulary and specific terms (jargon/slang) required to describe say your job.

For elderly, there is another added level of understanding the Japanese dialect(s) assuming that they do not come from the Kantou region. Of course, one can argue that a good command of "standard Japanese language" would be sufficient for interaction.

One last advice I would like to share from one of my Sensei is that conversation and interaction is not about how "well" or "perfect" you say it but is about how "nice" and "fitting" you say it.

I have seen people with very high scores of JLPT but during conversation they are so bad that it is such a turn off.

Interaction is a form of Art. Hope I answered your question!

Good Luck! :D
