This seems to be the USB charging port Alienware branded as USB PowerShare. Touted to charge your USB devices even when system is off. This can leads people into thinking that they can actually shutdown their Alienware laptop entirely and still charge from that special port.

I was rather skeptical of their claim as i haven't really come across any laptop or desktop that can actually charge USB device in cold shutdown mode. My own laptops and ASUS and ASRock desktop motherboards were only able to charge either when PC is on or USB device must be plugged in before putting PC into sleep mode. They do not work when i tried to do a cold shutdown or plug in after sleep, USB devices simply loses the charging mode.

After taking a deeper look into their technology, I was right. USB PowerShare will not be able to charge your USB device when system is doing cold shutdown in battery mode. Their info on web support mentioned that you can only charge devices after shutdown only in AC mode. That also doesn't imply you can plug in to charge after shutdown completed, you have to plug it in before shutting down. And battery charge capacity level must be more than 25%.

Their claim is simply too vague and rather misleading. This charging function also doesn't work out of the box, where you need to enable it from BIOS first before you can use. So users ought to take note that this USB PowerShare feature is no different from other USB sleep charging technology found on other laptops and motherboards.

And I will not encourage anyone to use it for charging in off mode as it is not any more convenient than your standalone USB wall adapter or powerbanks. With USB port active also means part of your PC motherboard circuitry will be powered as well, consuming more power to run it than a standalone USB powerbank/adapter will do.

How much ampere current max pass thru from those Alienware gaming laptop's usb port?

you can only charge devices after shutdown only in AC mode. That also doesn't imply you can plug in to charge after shutdown completed, you have to plug it in before shutting down. And battery charge capacity level must be more than 25%.

so many T&C just to use alienware laptop usb port to do charging when the laptop is in shutdown mode

nowadays many AC usb charger around some even have 4-5 ports enough to charge your own family's usb devices hardly got ppl use computer to charge computer usb port slower than those charger also.

I guess most people getting Alienware 17 R2 would not be getting Alienware Graphics Amplifier, unless you are serious gamer.

On the other hand, a serious gamer would not be getting a laptop afterall, Alienware Area-51 Gaming Desktop instead~

Since the price was just a few hundreds more than Alienware 17 R2

I agree, say if super hardcore probably Dell Alienware 17 R2 would not suffice their needs. wah Alienware Area51 very chio! the design so out of the world kind, got the satki alien-type style.

I think Dell makes more money from Dell Alienware 17 R3 gaming laptops since sell one can earn 2-3 times the profit margin le :o

their low range $500-600 is very affordable, they aiming at primary school students issit. the specs should be for very basic usage ba. maybe i can also fit into this category since mostly used for videos, MS office and surf surf web only :s13:

Alienware sales unit lesser than Inspirion series sales~ Alienware sell less earn more money while Inspirion series sell cheaper earn less money per unit but the quantity more than Alienware 17 R3.

Yah, non-gamer would not prefer Alienware 17 R2, not even consider a portable at 3.8kg. I guess Dell tried to stuff all good stuff in without consider the Asian market.

Asian young children already smaller built and height, carry such heavy weight wii not grow any taller.

i think non-gamer will prefer Dell XPS series ultrabook lightweight and slim than Dell Alienware gaming laptop heavy haha

p.s i believe next week video should be on XPS seris Dell laptop after this week Alienware 15 laptop video finish

Dell Alienware Graphics Amplifier not really suitable for small and neat table.

I guess I would rather get a dell inspiron 24 7000

I agree. I would also prefer neat table rather than cluster one.

:s22: If Dell Alienware Graphics Amplifier generate that much heat generate so much heat and needs an aircon room, I guess this system would be a failed product.

As you can see Dell Alienware Graphics Amplifier has multiple vents and fans to dissipate the hot air away from the GPU. But with so many fan units, there maybe buzzing noise if this unit was placed in a quiet environment~ :s22:

So end of day, you want quiet device not so powerful. Want powerful, noise~

alienware_graphics_amplifier_4_theverge.jpg

That's the tradeoff I guess. Best performance max details u need to get this booster.

Boss reporting in.

Hope everyone had a good holiday.

We see so many discussions out there so our question to everyone is this:
What do you guys love about Alienware? And if you have a choice, what parts would you change to make your Alienware more awesome? :o

To me, I love the design of Dell Alienware 15 R2 or 17 R3. Very unique. Maybe I am not a heavy gamer, other than dota2 and L4D2, the specs are impressive yet of no major use to me

Given a choice, I would change the material used for the case into a more robust composition metal alloy to give a lighter body yet strong against impacts. Can remove the V-lines on the coverlid and just use the glowing alien logo, maybe that can get rid of certain weight. Just my humble opinion.

This is inevitable. If you want desktop GPU performance, this is the least you can settle for. Already very good wor. Smaller than desktop CPU.

Anyway seems like nobody mentioned about the Alienware screen not being touchscreen. I suppose this would add greater value for gamers. Dell Alienware should make this optional for the consumers too.

I think majority/all of the graphics intensive game dont use touchscreen to play that why not much people bother much when they purchase the Dell Alienware gaming laptop. I think majority of those graphics intensive game at the moment still use keyboard & mouse to play that why nowadays gaming mouse/kb become hot selling. Razer gaming keyboard/mouse + Dell Alienware gaming laptop like Alienware 17 best combination if u got budget :)

The alienware 13 laptop design is so much nicer than dell inspiron 15, I like how the keyboard is being spread out and it is the most compact and lightest at avg 2.058kg in the alienware laptop family. But most will probably complain, screen so small for gaming?! :s22:

you can always connect Alienware 13 to a Dell monitor to make the screen bigger :)

Dell Alienware 17 R2 weight a whopping 3.8KG, I suggest Dell to change the laptop casing material to make it more lightweight and durable.

Dell as an american company can easily borrow NASA ultra light weight material for the laptop casing, who knows, the weight of Alienware 17 R2 can be shed by 50% to 2kg?

Oh my, we think quite alike mosmos about the Dell Alienware R2. Hahahha can anyhow borrow NASA ultra light weight material meh.

I think the extra space in the Dell Alienware Graphics Amplifier is meant for airflow. Its conveniently situated by the side with openings so that the fans are not obstructed.

:o

Which extra space are you referring to? :s11:

yeah i guess dell feels that niche market is a good revenue to earn coz they focus on the deep pockets who want pure raw power. at the same time, they didn't neglect the business units and consumers daily needs. :o

Nice~ lol i have become si ginna now :s13:

think Dell name it Alienware desktop Area-51 think is because they feel their this range of gaming desktop more powerful than the infamous USA's Area 51 which rumoured to have alien inside the area.

hopefully that model Alienware nice design but still allow DIY modification of parts inside or else look nice outside but cannot touch inside

I think the Dell Alienware R2 with USB PowerShare is not a new technology exclusive to Dell. Acer have that technology since 1990's.

That era no mobile smart phone, only a laptop cooler using the acer laptop usb port. After I shutdown the laptop, unplug from power socket, i wonder why the laptop cooler still running. They did not advertised this great technology that time~ :s22:

I wonder if Dell Inspiron 7000 series has such USB PowerShare? In shutdown mode, when the Intel Realsense Camera detected my present, the computer will auto startup and load the Internet Explorer or any preset software?

Is it? Or just that Acer laptop cannot properly shutdown due to connected devices? :s22:

Most Dell laptops also comes with this USB PowerShare...

The price for Dell Alienware 17 R3 is scary. Maybe i too peasant, their target audience for gaming is all rich zai. Quite envy those who gotta that, can how lian to friends make them heart itchy lol. Or is $4,000 the norm hardcore gamers:s11:

Price for the Alienware gaming notebook may look steep, but its offers more than just whatever's on the spec list. It's customisability and comprehensive warranty coverage that counts also. Other brands can only offer either good customisability or good warranty support but hardly both.

Yeah give them dual core CPU, IGP, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, Windows and can last them long enough.
