Lets discuss about non-k overclocking

Did some research about this.. seen fantastic overclocking results 4.6GHz etc..

It is surprisingly easy too, based on the source here


More research also shows that there are bios available for gigabyte asrock asus msi.
This is what asrock stated
1. Intel iGPU, CPU Turbo Ratio, AVX and C-State function will be disabled when running SKY OC, a discrete VGA card is required.
2. For Z170M PRO4S / Z170M-ITX/ac / Z170M Pro4 / Z170M Extreme4, the CPU temperature cannot be read when running SKY OC.
3. The overclocking results may vary between different CPUs and hardware configurations.
4. Due to future hardware/firmware updates or other reasons, the availability of SKY OC is subject to change without notice in advance.
5. There are certain risks involved with overclocking, such as damaging the CPU, memory module, power supply unit, or destabilizing the system. It should be done at your own expense. If you are unsure about the risks of overclocking, please seek professional advice.


Will this be an eye-opener for sandy/ivy bridge users too?
So what will K series chips do now?
What will happen to amd?

It is nothing eye opening, perhaps only to newbies who began with Sandy Bridge, when Intel first started hard lockdown on FSB overclocking...

Really no point when you can only do so on their most expensive Z chipset motherboards for now...

Overclocking is still better and much easier done on K CPUs with multiplier range unlocked. FSB can be further fine tuned to achieve slightly higher gains.

As for AMD, they have been long known for their generosity and flexibility to leave the options open. They even close eyes for those function discovered by motherboard makers, like unlocking cores on Phenom II/Athlon II Deneb-based die-harvested SKUs... (in order to woo more ship jumpers...)

Tbh, FSB oc is not really easy to tune than multiplier. FSB a slight small mistake or wrongly tuned can end up in a unstable rig.

Its not really an eye opener. And it is nothing breakthrough. To pair it a non k on z170 is a bit not matched.

Usually when buying a value added rig, the z170 mobo is costly, and usually the price paid difference can or may ended up spending on a gpu of a next tier which in terms give much more performance than overclocking, IF the user is mainly thinking on gaming oriented.

K series chip is still here to stay.
