Lets talk OLED Laptop

TV you watch it from a distance but not for laptop.

I don't think the distance have anything to do with the brightness really. Even if you see a few meters away from the TV, a bright TV is still going to be bright. TV generally you use in the house, but a laptop you will bring out. So depending on how reflective the screen is, a brighter display is always welcome. I generally keep the display brightness around 200 nits, but there are times outdoors where higher brightness will help. Its like most phones display gets really bright when you are using it outdoors. It is just that you don't realize it.

Ok ok. As an OLED version of the Yoga Slim 7 Pro version. I guess i must write something here.

I got mine from Best Denki for $1709.

There are a couple of versions of the Yoga Slim 7 Pro AMD variant. Hence it might be confusing that why some models are sky rocket 2.2k pricing.

Arranging from lowest end range specs

- 5800H, 16Gb ram, 1tb storage, 2.2k res 60hz IPS display (Harvey Norman exclusive) $1699

- 5800H, 16Gb ram, 1tb storage, 2.8k res 90Hz OLED display (Best Denki Exclusive) $1799

- 5900HX, 16Gb ram, 512Gb/1tb storage, 2.8k res 90Hz IPS display (outside retailing unit) ($1899-$2099)

- 5900HS*, 16Gb ram, 512Gb/1tb storage, 2.8k res 90Hz OLED display, Nvidia MX450 gpu ($2199-2299)

So when Best Denki ran a promo on their model exclusive at $1709, it becomes a no brainer for me to choose this model over the rest of the offerings. Even if there were special coupons online for the rest of the model, i still think Best Denki offerings are better.

And this is the first time i bought an OLED laptop. First off, 400nits is indeed bright enough for me. Even under harsh lighting conditions. I find 400nits are still visible and ok to use.

The one thing i like about OLED display was how colour accurate it was for me in my day to day photoshop and lightroom needs. Best of all, whatever the edits i did, surprisingly turns out well on mobile devices also. Unlike my previous Asus Zephyrus G14 which it claims that there is a Pantone validated display etc. A gaming laptop is a gaming laptop, the colour shifted greatly when you view it on any mobile devices. So that is one aspects why i love my yoga 7 slim pro more.

There is another reason why OLED. The ability to switch off pixels for black. Hence you dont get to see bandings on some black backgrounds which you can see clearly on IPS displays especially for movies.

But do be warn. The battery milleage is heavily reliant on dark theme mode. If you switch to dark theme mode, your battery milleage may be better. Choosing a light theme mode, you will noticed, even on lower brightness, OLED still consume more power than IPS despite being on the lower brightness settings.

The Yoga 7 slim pro that i had, grows on me every day. Due to the vibrancy of it, the colours coming out from it, the fluid 90Hz panel. I have no complains. Just love it.

Im also well aware of the burn in issues. But i believe if my samsung phones oled ones can last 3 years before a slight burn in can be seen. I think OLED technology is definitely there to mitigate this issue. Time will tell, perhaps 2 years down the road, i shall take note and see my Yoga 7 slim pro again.

I hope there will be more and more OLED options out there soon.

OLED generally makes the color a lot more vibrant. When I switched from my iPad Pro 10.5 to the Samsung Galaxy S7+, the difference is very apparent. It looks nice to me. And I agree that it is better to switch to dark theme to improve battery life.

As to burn in, I feel it may still be a problem for Windows based system depending on one's usage. For example, if the laptop is used for work, chances is that the apps you use is not exactly full screen. The Windows taskbar will always be there. So that portion may see a burn in faster if the screen is very bright. On phones and tablets, this is less of an issue since the applications always run full screen, i.e. no fixed task bar in sight. That's my opinion.

To be honest, I think oled doesn’t need to be so bright to shine well. 400 nits is actually sully more than enough for oled for most people, any higher would also mean higher battery consumption. However, the tech is improving year on year and many consumers are now aware of this display technology, so I believe oled panel monitors, TVs and laptop pricing will come down.

I am waiting to find more variety and affordable OLED monitors. So far this technology is taking a very long time to become mainstream for PC market.

As for brightness, because most OLED monitors are found on laptops/ tablets only, therefore, higher brightness is actually preferred. We don't always have to max out the brightness because 400 nits can be very bright when you use it indoors. But outdoors and depending on the lighting, it may not be enough.

I believe there is a Zenbook 13 ux425 in OLED, probably cheaper than what you have listed down.

I had a Spectre 13 in OLED previously and noticed greys were not uniform. You can notice it very particularly in File Manager in dark mode where you have green tint on some areasm just wondering if this is better on newer models?

I am waiting to find more variety and affordable OLED monitors. So far this technology is taking a very long time to become mainstream for PC market.

OLED no mean for outdoor, if often use in outdoor, bright LCD still a better choice.

I was contemplating getting the C1 to use as a monitor, but I decided not to. I feel besides the fact it is very wide, it is also very tall. For me that is sitting very close to the desk, I think it is too big.

Mine haven’t come yet. However I have tried using 55 LG gx oled while connected to my laptop. My laptop is LG gram 16, bought this instead of Lenovo yoga 7 slim pro for more screen estate and weight. So I can only drive 4K 60 frames. Productivity wise isn’t very good IMO, maybe laptop is weak and no gpu so don’t feel it as being very responsive either. Need wait my 48c1 come and connect to my rtx 3070 then see Zai or not.

I was contemplating getting the C1 to use as a monitor, but I decided not to. I feel besides the fact it is very wide, it is also very tall. For me that is sitting very close to the desk, I think it is too big.

Ya actually I didn’t want to get also, but yolo, intend to wall mount it and push the desk further towards me. Mainly going to use this pc for gaming and entertainment, light productivity

Haha. I can't convince myself to get a screen this big even though the display looks great. My old eyes cannot take it anymore and I don't have that much space in my working room to push my desk further. So I will just have to patiently wait and see. I was thinking may be can try the Samsung Neo G9, but that cost even more than the C1 55 inch. So back to waiting.

I am currently using Samsung CRG9. Compare to Neo G9, Neo G9 have even brighter screen with mini LED. I really dont know if I can really utilise all the glory. As now i always turn off the local dimming because it is too bright for daily use. I only turn on occasionally when I watch movie in full screen.

I also cannot calibrate it when local dimming is turn on because is too bright, even when I adjust to zero in brightness setting.

So I am leaning towards OLED as not too bright (Plus 50% off blue light) for daily use.

Yeah, next year should have. But my house no space put Liao lol. My main workstation is 2x LG 27GL850, other gaming pc gonna put LG 48c1 oled.

I think 32 to 35 is probably the sweet spot for me. 42 is still massive as a monitor.
