There are 2 types if you ask me...

1. Smartphone with camera functionality
2. Camera with smartphone functionality

And CM1, Galaxy K Zoom, S4 Zoom, even the Pureview 808 falls into category no.2 to me. Lumia 1020 is probably the limit for me.

Comparing 1 and 2 is like comparing oranges and broccoli. Both got their own pros and cons. Just a matter of personal choice. Image quality, or course no.2 will win. As a smartphone, no.1 will win. If want to just merge everything together and compare which is best, might as well do a FF DSLR with smartphone capabilities. Confirm best image quality on a "phone".

Like an earlier poster mentioned, it's probably on auto mode. But definitely not the same settings. The ISO is clearly much higher on the S6 resulting in a brighter image. But it might have different focus point which might result in different AE (auto exposure) settings.

I'm guessing the same too. The image by S6 is a lot noisier meaning a higher ISO. And if a higher ISO only resulted in an image with this brightness, I would guess that the actual lighting conditions is closer to the G4 rather than the S6. This is just guesstimate of course based on my own experience with my S6. S6 in auto mode does have the tendency to go for a higher ISO than necessary, probably to go for a faster shutter speed to avoid blur. But the resulting image looks a little too bright for my liking some times in full auto mode (or maybe that just how Samsung prefers their low light shots to look). But this is just personal preference. Some people would prefer a brighter image. :/

manual mode at ISO 400. Which is closer to the actual lighting conditions but still a little dim. Which would be great if there were shutter speed controls too on the S6. :/

Even DSLR got difficulties taking photo of moon & stars, firstly moon are usually overexposed so you can only see a bright spot, and it's way too far for smartphone cam to take it. next Singapore got serious light-pollution that washed out the night sky so you can't see stars on phone.

anyway, ISO should be set low enough so the noise won't be obvious enough to affect the stars, and also you might need mini tripod for it since the shuttle speed will be slower.

Anyone who knows please correct me if i'm wrong, i'm not that into photography stuff.

The problem is hardware and geographical limitations? (and maybe your definition of "good" and "bad" looking) haha.

First of all, a phone's camera hardware is simply not up to the task. Even if you manually set the settings, like a lower ISO to ensure the night sky doesn't look grainy/noisy, and a suitable shutter speed to capture just enough light from stars and moon (but not too long that it gets in too much light from surrounding). You still can't change the aperture to control the light. Then you would definitely need a tripod of course.

Which brings me to the next point. Most places in Singapore are quite well lit. Chances are, when trying to capture images of the dimly lit stars and moon, you end up capturing a lot of the surrounding lights too (light pollution). And with the complete lack of optical zoom, they will end up being very tiny, and when you zoom in, they look grainy and ugly.

So what I'm saying is... don't expect too much. lol. No phone camera today can take images like this.

This was taken with an entry level DSLR with a lens with slightly longer lens using a tripod. And i went to the highest floor on my HDB block. And it was a night with a particularly "big" moon. And i had to crop the image tighter to get to this. And this is what I would consider "okay looking" shot of moon and starts. So yeah... on a smartphone?

should use proper camera, e.g. even a compact camera will be much better than handphone camera for such scenario

i only use handphone camera for candid street photography; all other scenarios, a camera is much better
