Comparing the various reviews, the results given by some of
them are rather shocking because of inaccuracy.

One such source is from the above GSM arena which often
protect itself by having this:

"Disclaimer. We can not guarantee that the information on this page is 100% correct."

So we have to wait for a couple of weeks more before the
truth is out as more and more reviews pour in.

And those wide angles photos look weird. Buildings are slanted by the sides. Like some fish eye effects.

Thats not abnormal. Real wide angle photography exactly looks like that. Photographers refer to it as barrel distortion.

A fisheye has 180 degree view so it will curve the most. A 'wide-angle' will be somewhere between the fish eye extreme and the 'regular' angle that we are used to (around 28mm focal length)

here's my G4 shooting through a 0.45x wide angle lens. You can see the curving edges.

if you ever have the chance to hands on the camera on a Sony Z5, you'll also notice its angle feels wider than normal, cos its lens is around 24mm which is wider than the typical smartphone.

You will also notice the image quality worsens towards the edges, that's another shortcoming of wide angle lens and i wonder how the G5 copes with that. Actually I want to see how the G5 does wide angle in low light cos I keep hearing rumours that its low light specs (OIS, aperture) arent as good as the main camera.

All flagships went down the 1440p QHD slippery slope since 2015. Our battery life will never be as good as it used to be unless every phone has the kind of battery size that the S7 edge has.

My photo friend told me this can be edited but will average consumers bother with fine tuning the photos? All they know is that the outcome of the photos are looking weird.

There are some cameras which have special design lenses that can do wide angle and optically correct the curving so that the final image looks 'straight' but those would probably be super expensive.

Also I think this is the generation that is used to seeing things like gopro footage, thats a consumer device that also has this kind of wide angle effect when you look at the footage, so maybe the general public are actually ok with it.

I think the bigger concern is whether the camera UI is intuitive enough. Hopefully the general user knows how to toggle between them cos my mother who uses a G3 can sometimes forget how to toggle between Simple and Auto...

we will only know in the long term, as is the case for such kinds of device issues (like AMOLEDs having long term degradation where the blue colour will degrade)

my device was 10 months of use before the status bar icons started having image retention on the screen. To be clear its not a permanent effect (it'll fade once your display is off for a long enough amount of time) but its still a minor annoyance.

their comparison seems to show the G5 pics actually being visibly superior to the G4, something I couldnt tell from the older gsm arena similar comparison (where the photos were taken at MWC venue)

my guess is, the G5 fixes the biggest flaw in the G4 which is crap auto mode quality under low light (which makes the stock app force HDR to salvage the quality) but manual mode should be more equal match

it is way too early to even be asking about SOT. The phone needs to be put through its paces for at least a few days.

The G4 was launched 30th May 2015. Half a month before that, we were already told the launch date and the telcos opened up their registration of interest too. A full month before launch, 50 people in singapore were selected in a marketing campaign to try the G4 as a daily driver.

We get none of this for the G5. They cant commit to a specific date, which is why their FB just keeps saying 'Early April', their 'launch event' was a closed door session at universal studios (though to be fair, the G4 event was also closed door at Artscience Museum), the big ad at Bugis Village is still showing the V10, Lee Min Ho isnt standing at bus stop billboards promoting the G5.

The reality check is, we're just not their priority market anymore.
