Translation:
An unemployed Vietnamese woman has reportedly been sleeping rough at Bishan Park for several consecutive months and asking passers-by for money, sparking public dissatisfaction and discussion.
When interviewed, the woman admitted that she had been staying overnight in the park, explaining that she had no income and could only beg for money to buy food.
A concerned reader, Madam Wang (70), told
Shin Min Daily News that she had frequently seen the woman sleeping at a pavilion in Bishan Park since last December.
“She would place a mattress on the stone bench and lie on it to sleep.”
Madam Wang initially thought the woman was staying there only temporarily, but was surprised when the woman began asking members of the public for money.
“She said she was from Vietnam and had no money for food, and asked if people could give her some money. She would only ask for a few dollars each time. There are many elderly people in the park, and quite a number of them feel sympathetic and give her a few dollars.”
What upset Madam Wang was that the woman had also asked her husband for money, and even asked him whether he wanted to go out with her.
“The park is meant for exercise and walks. Now someone is living here and going around asking for money—it doesn’t look good!”
When
Shin Min Daily News reporters visited the park on Friday (February 13) afternoon, they did not see the woman. However, behind a public restroom, they observed numerous personal belongings, including toiletries, towels, slippers, a basin, a mattress, and a suitcase.
A member of the public, Ms He Zhuying (58), said: “She is usually around in the mornings and evenings. Sometimes she occupies the public toilet for extended periods, preventing others from using it. She has asked me for money before, but I refused.”
At around 9pm on Friday, reporters visited the park again and found the woman fast asleep in the pavilion. She appeared to be in her forties, spoke Mandarin, and identified herself as Ms Zhuang from Vietnam. She acknowledged that she had indeed been sleeping in the park for the past two months.
She added that she leaves the park during the day and returns at night to sleep. When asked about begging for money, she admitted it, saying she had no job and therefore had to ask others for money; otherwise, she would have nothing to eat.
“I’m trying to find a job, but I may only be able to secure one after the Lunar New Year.”
Park security: Police have attended four times
A park security guard said he had seen the police attend the scene four times in relation to the matter.
Mr Zhong (70), who works as a security guard at the park, said he had been seeing the woman there for several months and had once given her S$4.
“At the time she said she had no money for food. I felt sorry for her and gave her a few dollars. Nearby residents are indeed unhappy with her behaviour. I know the police have come four times because of this.”
He added that he was unclear about the woman’s background. “She tells different people different stories—sometimes she says her boss threw her out, other times she says she quarrelled with her husband. We don’t know what the real situation is. However, I sometimes see a man coming to meet her at night; he seems to be her boyfriend.”
In response, Ms Zhuang confirmed that the police had spoken to her. “But I was not asked to leave. As long as I find a job, I will find another place to stay.”
