After a month not checking on it, decided to just walk into Cineleisure, choose the date and time slot that suits me, and bought the tickets. Plenty of good seats available. No queue, no hassle. And at a non-premium price.

Would not have wanted to watch a movie any other way. It’s meant to be leisure, not pressure.

Admin, stop silencing a whole flock just because of a few black sheep. If any idiots want to geo-politicise it, just issue them 6 demerit points or ban them sua liao.

Finally watched the movie!

First of all, I must say the movie doesn’t look low-budget at all. The production values look pretty good. The makeups are also very good. Quite surprised to see that they were able to make the key characters look convincingly older than their actual young ages.

And the movie is impressive. It deserves the praises.

But the movie belongs to Li Sitong. Her performance is superb. Such great performance from a fresh young actress. By comparison, the male lead’s character is pretty one-dimensional.

I think the movie and the director can win the golden horses. And I hope Li Sitong gets best actress. She’s actually the centre of the movie. Without her, I think the movie may not be that moving.

She had no acting experience. And she did very well.

The whole show i only beo li si tong. Cried when she became the 1mio ah ma.
The movie was like cheap comedy until Li Sitong’s first scene. And then it’s like the tone of the movie shifted. I was quite surprised because, before watching the movie, I only saw her media appearances on YouTube, so I thought her role was a giddy young lady. But on her first appearance, I was already struck by how different she was, how she just carried off the scene. In fact, she carried the weight of the entire movie.

is it still screening? idk whether to watch or not because of the hype. also dun understand teochew...

shld I watch mandarin version or teochew for the authenticity? (the voice over may not show out the emotions or body language)

Depends to me I find this movie rather rojak.
Rojak in the sense the language used especially Teochew in modern day scene.
That is shot in Thailand not China and in Thailand how they speak Chinese dialect are also different. :s22:

yes still showing, got more teochew sessions than mandarin sessions now i think

either is fine, it's a good movie regardless

I would say it's a good movie overall. The actress that portrayed the young teochew lady in Thailand was pretty good.

However, just my personal opinion. It is a politically correct movie. It never mentioned about the cultural revolution and how it affected the people. It simply skipped it to make the show look nice.

Is good show, just that the ending got some "post movie epilogue" with the giant wall of text, that part annoyed me because there's so much to read.

Me ish Hokkien kia, can only understand the common and important verbs and nouns in Teochew, the rest of the words are "filler" to my ears 😅 but even then also I feel using Teochew is better to convey the emotions and expressions because there's scenes of Mandarin being taught to kids, which would be really weird if watched in Mandarin dub

Honestly I find it "normal", the CR was not the main plot of the show - if I want to know what happened during CR i would just watch another show. This is just a show about normal civilians living their life in Thailand/Chaoshan.

However that leaves an interesting question:
Which army was Di Gong joining? PLA or KMT?

Love this when 南枝 first meet 淑柔 before filming. She’s so unassuming. 😍
