Light gaming desktop upgrade recommendation

Hi experts,

looking to upgrade my desktop for gaming, productivity and some coding.

This is my current specs, bought in 2020:

Ryzen 5 3600
ASRock B450M Steel Legend
XPG D50 3200MHZ 2x 8GB
500GB Lexar NM610 NVMe
1TB Toshiba 7200RPM
Tecware Forge M
Zotac RTX 2060
650w Aigo GP650 80 plus bronze
Intel AX200 Wi-Fi 6 BT 5


I would like to upgrade

1. Ram from 16 to 32 GB (currently at 2x 8GB)
2. GPU from 2060 to maybe like a 4060 or 4070
3. Add another 2TB NVMe (or replace the current 500GB NVMe if not enough slot)

Questions:

1. I'm worried that my PSU cannot support especially a 4070, is that concern valid?
2. My friend recommended me to sell my rig without my SSD and HDD and then buy a new 4070 rig, i see out there sell for around $1500. How much will my current rig without the harddrives go for in the market? can I get $700? or more/less?

1. Cutting it a bit close but the PSU should be able to support RTX 4070

2. You can try and sell for $700 on Carousell but I doubt you will find any takers. There is not much demand for lower end secondhand parts nowadays and in any case, at that price, I can build a decent new rig.

As for your proposed upgrades,

1. DDR4 is really cheap nowadays and since you are using for productivity, 32 GB should be the minimum.

2. Forget the RTX 4060. New RTX 4070 or look around for secondhand RTX 3070 if you do not intend to get a new rig.

3. 2 TB NVMe is below S$200 nowadays and games are taking up more and more space. So a definite upgrade.

Depend on your budget but the core issue is that crappy power supply which you should upgrade.

So:
1) Replace the Lexar NM610 NVMe to a better SSD like Samsung 970 EVO Plus (970 have DRAM)
or 980 non pro (without DRAM).
However you miss the boat as past few months 2TB SSD like Samsung was selling under $200.
So a 2TB SSD will cost around $229 (Local price), 1TB will be around $119.
Take note recommend to do a clean install of Windows 10 to make the PC faster.
If you are not sure how to do it can bring to a shop.

2) Upgrade the RAM to 32GB.
RAM prices have fallen a lot these period so a 32GB wil cost you around $10X.

3) Power supply
This you have decide based on which graphic card you want to upgrade.
Cheapest PSU will be FSP HV PRO 85+ 650W around $70.

4) Upgrade the graphic card to RTX 3060 TI.
RTX 3060 Ti is roughly around $500, actually RTX 3060 is better than RTX 4060.

If you ask me this rig what is holding it's performance back is the SSD which is why I put it first.
You can do incremental upgrading meaning the SSD first than RAM.
As graphic card wise you will definetely need a better power supply.

not really, 4070s can run well on 550w psus. but as technie said, best to replace if u have the budget, though i wouldnt settle on the hv pro.

without storage, i think best case scenario is around $600 if ur ok to wait for a willing buyer.

personally, if the cpu performance is still satisfactory for the use case, i wouldnt do a full platform upgrade as ur friend suggested. ram prices, especially ddr4, are pretty good at the moment, though nvme prices did go up steeply quite recently. that said, if there are no other storage drives in ur system, there is one more m2 slot on ur mobo that is available, but it only supports sata, so most nvmes will not work in that slot unless they explicitly list support for sata mode; it would be best to replace the 500gb one. as for gpu upgrade, i would just forget about the 4060 as koenig mentioned, the rx6650xt/rx7600 gives the same performance for a much lower price tag. either of those nets a ~40% uplift from ur 2060, though if u spend about double the price, the 4070 is available with a >100% uplift.

Light... Old specs still more than enough. Endure 2 more years. Unless your light gaming is actually play cyberpunk 2077 or recent UE5.2 games, then it's not light anymore.

4070 is not power hungry since it's only 200W TDP, 650w is enough. This is the most change you'll feel for gaming, up to 1440p.

For simple productivity(excel/word...) or coding, not much change. Unless you do large photos/video edits often, then 32 GB helps.

If it was me, I'll just endure 2 more years and change everything (Since socket/ram/cpu all need to be different). If psycho babble, by internet or friends... spend away, especially only on the 4070 or at minimum the extra nvme storage(only use around 20watts)...

You can consider 2 kits of this for less than S$200 total after CC discount. DDR4-3600 is fine, you are not limited to DDR4-3200.
