for me yes.
i always airplay the video in safari to tv and still be able to use the other apps. Note if you are playing games with music, then the music will also play from tv as well...

For other movies apps i m not sure.
Usually i watch video from zjtv and xinmsn etc..... but sometimes it is buggy

But Apple TV offer videos from youtube, WWDC and many other channel as well... good investment to me though there are many options out there

bumping up this thread - is there any solution to connect an ipad air with lightning cable port to hdmi output? I know one way is to connect iPad > Digital AV port > HDMI. But there's still some loss of quality i reckon.

Any suggestions pls? Apple TV? :)

yep, the Lightning Digital AV Adapter should work for you.

Lightning Digital AV Adapter - Apple Store (Singapore)

Taken from iPad Air Tech Specs - https://www.apple.com/sg/ipad-air/specs/

Video mirroring and video out support: Up to 1080p through Lightning Digital AV Adapter and Lightning to VGA Adapter (adapters sold separately)

But of course, if you want a wireless solution plus some additional apps like Netflix + Hulu Plus and other Apple TV features, get the Apple TV instead. I have one and it's definitely worth it for a $150 device.

That adaptor is about $70 + a HDMI cable should be half the price of an Apple TV.

you also need to check if the app you are using supports Airplay, some apps i know such as Mio TV don't allow Airplay to Apple TV for DRM reasons
