Hey all, just wanted your opinion and advice on getting a large loan to fund a medical degree abroad (about 200k for fees). Thanks in advance.

Its not about the money for me bro.. cant imagine myself doing anything else. If I work very hard I can pay off the loan relatively fast.

Most people will take 20-30k loan for their degrees and just need 1 year of work to clear off the loan.

200k is a huge loan for uni fees alone, you may want to calculate in all the accommodation, travel, living expenses etc.

Theres no scholarship option for medicine. Ive tried looking. Closest thing sg offers is the PEG, which I'd take but thats only for clinical years. Most other scholarship options are just for normal non medical undergrad degrees.

Yup, will be factoring those in. The fees is the killer for me. Ive already worked out ways to lower my cost of living and am going to work part time there as well.

There's scholarships for medicine degrees. Astar has it, my friend got offered.

Yup, will be factoring those in. The fees is the killer for me. Ive already worked out ways to lower my cost of living and am going to work part time there as well.

Just a few cents from me:

1. Make sure you have checked & confirmed that the medical degree is recognised in SG. The Singapore Medical Association's website has that list of schools.

2. Unless you are a straight As super intelligent student, you might have to drop the idea of "work part time". Med school is pure hard crazy work where you will be mugging & mugging almost non-stop.

3. You mentioned that if you work hard you should be able to pay off the debt fast. Well, by default you have no choice whether you want to work hard or not as a doc, at least not for the first 3-4 years until the end of your MO postings.

4. Alternatively, there's the Duke-NUS Medical School where you can do the MD program and still end up becoming a doctor here.

many singaporeans are studying medicine in China. It's recognized by Singapore Medical Council. the fees per year are SGD 9,000. So why would you want to come to UK or go to US? Why would you want to part with $200,000? It's unnecessary.

if you work very hard you can pay off the loan relatively fast - is this before you get the degree, during the course of your degree, or after you get the degree?

if its before and during the course of the degree (meaning you have ways to earn quickly and pay off the loan fast even before getting the degree), then why not work hard now and quickly save up the 200k (or save up 100-150k then take a loan for the rest) before going for it. if its after... then sorry, that is not really realistic and things may not always work out as planned

Ive looked into duke. The fees arent that much cheaper and their style is more suited for clinicians rather than docs (more on research).

All 3. I am on the gap year right now to save up abit... the problem is that im not young. Im alr gg to be 25. Working till 30 to get about 100k saved before starting school again isnt favourable in age for me tbh... its something ive thought about and am still considering...

Next, is you passion still burning within you?

Understand German's medicine fees is relatively cheap but you have to pass the German language in their foundation year.

How about studying in IMU in KL, do pretty well for the 1st 3 years in IMU and arm with the sterling results, you may apply to US or UK uni that tied with IMU but then bear in mind, you must be very disciplined and hardworking as your will be competing with other students in US or UK when applying your medicine course. By going this approach, it somehow helps you to reduce your school fees. My colleague's daughter graduated via this avenue.
