Local Poly or Private

Hi I'm a current temasek polytechnic year 1 student, just completed my first semester and have a GPA of 3.1. I think it's kinda impossible for me to enter local uni like Nus, SMU and so on except SIT. I am thinking of going to a private institute like kaplan as they offer a faster path to get my degree. 8 months diploma and 18 months bachelor. I am thinking of getting bachelor of science (honours) in management with international business from royal holloway, university of London.

As I'm taking a business course in temasek poly, I think it's alright to transfer to private as business course is quite commonly offered by private institute unlike applied science or engineer course. What would you all recommend or suggest?

hey just first semester and you are giving up? 3.1 is not too bad a GPA and you still have much more chances to up your GPA.

whats ur consideration? not interested in course or no confidence to push on? shortcut doesnt mean that its good.

I have no confidence in getting better results.. I have calculated, it's kinda impossible for me to enter local good uni like nus.. So in the end, private or overseas uni is still my path... Must well I transfer to private now and save a few years?

I heard the uol from kaplan is not bad as the cert is the same as done on campus and royal holloway has also partner with tp so it's recognize in singapore right? What do you think?

A distance learning or ‘franchised’ degree is not equivalent to the actual one you get on their campus. Besides, I could not find any collaboration with TP & Royal Holloway, University of London. Are you referring to the advanced standing arrangements that some universities have with Temasek Polytechnic?

Yea that's what in referring to. Really? I went down to kaplan and they say it's the same as on campus. The cert will not have kaplan name on it.

Most private degree students have at least a local poly dip or A level.

If you do not even have either one, I think it will look bad on you. A private dip is practically useless.

A local poly dip can give you an entry ticket to the workforce straight away. Many overseas unis value our poly dips and give exemptions. The local unis are taking in more poly students year by year. Even UniSIM accepts only local poly dips.

Dun take the easy way out. The more years you spend on a public education will pave a smoother road for you ahead.

Forgive me for being blunt but stop being so naive. Kaplan will try all means to sell you the course as they are profit driven. If the distance learning degree awarded in SG is the same as what is being awarded by the oversea campus, then there is never a need for students to go overseas to further studies right? They may say that the degree does not have Kaplan name on it but the transcript may reflect that you have done it locally.

The advance standing that TP has with local/overseas universities is most probably because it is a local polytechnic and has met certain standards. That is why some universities allow TP graduates to be exempted modules or direct entry into their second year.

I have a group of secondary school friends going private right after O's although they can enter local poly, they choose to enter private as they could enter workforce earlier and get more experience. I understand your point and will consider what you say. Really thanks for giving me suggestion!

But diploma is a step stone for me to get my degree and it's so common nowadays. Actually, i'm really interested in the uol offered by kaplan.

I understand and we have the same thinking in mind, "if so good everyone will enter". But I have seen a few bachelor cert although not the same uni that i want but it really does not have kaplan on it and the student say its the same as done on campus... That's why I'm considering this for the past few weeks and still haven made up my mind.
