hey guys, i would like to know what are your opinions on the topic title?

Local Recognized Degree or Private Preferred Degree?

I got accepted into the uni mentioned below:

Local uni - SIT CS + Game Design <-- (not my 1st or 2nd choice)
Private uni - Sim GE (Digital System Securities)

In regards to what i like more, it's system securities @SimGE. However, since it's private, it's probably less recognized that the local SIT degree. But a local degree will increases the chance of getting a job i presume?

Disregarding the cost (Both of them cost about the same per year), May i have the readers' intake on this?

Thanks!

It really depends on what you want to do after graduation?

If you are considering a public sector career, SIT might be a safer choice as it is one of the autonomous universities.

But you should always do what you enjoy, in this case digital system securities.

Do note that the degree that you got accepted into is a foreign degree (digipen)
Not SIT degree

At the end of the day, you will be conferred a Digipen degree NOT SIT
So its not considered Local Uni

Only degrees that are conferred under the name of SIT is considered Local Uni and recognised.

Those SIT-OU degrees have practically no entry requirement other than to have a relevant diploma
i see. so in the end, both of my choices are private degrees?

Off topic, is Sim GE admission rate high? my gpa is 3.4

Both are different courses that trained you for different job.

SIT-DigiPen's BS in Computer Science and Game Design trained you more towards Game Design then Computer Science (CS).

SIM-Wollongong Bachelor of Computer Science (Digital Systems Security) trained you in CS & focus on Digital Systems Security.

Remember to take forSIT's "advice" with a pinch of salt. See his thread to get an idea of his reality :s13:

Actually your GPA is quite high
My GPA is 3.41

And I got offered SIT infosec & SMU infosys too
But you have to have a strong portfolio

You said that this digipen course is your 3rd choice?
So you got rejected for your 1/2 choices for SIT?

May I know what's them?
1st choice is Info Security (I went for the interview, probably got rejected based on the situation now)

2nd choice is Software Eng

Just jumped from 1st to 3rd.

Oh. Are you serving NS?
If so can re-apply again next yr

Hope you get into SIT infosec too and we can become coursemates :)

The OU (overseas uni) degrees in SIT is not really doing well as shown in the GES (Graduates employment survey)

Most likely cos its not recognised because of On-campus issue

On-Campus degree = attendance at the home campus of the university that awards the degree

Since SIT-OU degrees are conferred under the name of the OU
But students are studying in SIT which is not the Home Campus of the OU

Say if you're getting a Digipen degree, you have to be studying at the Home Campus of Digipen in US in order for the degree to be recognised

Same for SIM-UOW case
UOW degree must study at their Home Campus in wollongong for degree to meet the On-Campus criteria

Basically, a school cert that is from singapore, you used it to find jobs IN SINGAPORE after u graduate, its is recognized IN GENERAL and wont be recognized if u bring it to other countries.?

the SIT-ou same logic. its not a cert from school, so it wont be recognised in general if u use it to find jobs to singapore but when u bring the cert back to the cert's origin country to work, it will be recognized cause its considered a local cert there. is this assumptions right?

It all depends on what you see yourself doing in the future?

Both of these degrees lead to very different career path, which one do you have more interest in?

Anyway on a side note, not sure how the SIM-GE program is like, Digipen program is quite rigorous be prepared to work hard in that program.

Yes. I've always wanted to ask him thus question. Meaning to say the sit degree in campus is not recognized when they go overseas cause honestly.... Everyone in the world have no idea sit exist besides singapore and the partnering uni right. Compared to unis like Glasgow, liverpool, Newcastle which are big house unis that conduct research etc. So if go by for sit logic, sit cert is more recognized than OU cert locally but at the same time only 1 small red dot knows about sit but the whole world knows about unis like Glasgow, Newcastle etc. If you take nus or ntu on the other hand, they are campuses than conduct research etc so definitely whole world knows right? So to say OU are not recognize in Sg because not "local"but is recognized everywhere. Rather go with OU since got higher chances of getting recognition with OU name rather than SIT name which no one knows beside sinkapore

You still dont get what I am trying to say...

You ask yourself this Q

Student A = Attended home campus of UOL and got a degree under UOL
Student B = Attended campus SIM & got a degree under UOL

Student B go ANYWHERE also not recognise why? cuz its not an On-campus degree

Unless you tell me other countries dont have requirements of an On-campus degree then this will not stand

Coming back to the point
SIT degree = conferred by SIT & studied at Home Campus of SIT
SIT-OU degree = conferred by OU & studied at SIT (not an on-campus degree)
If want on-campus degree, should attend the OU Home Campus for it to be recognised

This is what I am saying...
You think SIM-UOL their degree is from UOL but is the degree widely accepted as a "legitimate" degree?

Doesnt mean your degree name put UOL means UOL lei
Ever heard of Distant learning degree not recognised?
External student not recognised?

And for the one you keep saying OU easier to get in cause short years, yes it's true. But even if you go to their own home campus with a relevant diploma, you can get 1 to 2 years off too. So quite similar. And yes, I did check with OU home campus GPA requirements from Sg to their unis and most of them just say a GPA of 3.0 will suffice or a B average. So not so different from OU sit requirements and the duration of the degree . I checked with Australians, Canadian and UK unis. Plus you said you need to have a relevant diploma = no competition. Not true. I applied a course that isn't related to anything about engineering and yet I got it. And the people who applied are also from Jc and poly. So that has been debunked. Recognized or not, it's not up to us but how the work force is set up. Reason sit created this OU degree is because the course are niche course. Its fine tuned to be closer to Singapore style. Hence a bit special but by no means better than other degrees. And tbh if you actually talked to a hr person, the first criteria is just seeing your qualifications, not school. After that, they your accolades. If you score like Lou sai in sit but other guy is honors in his other uni like Sim, they definitely gonna see the Sim guy deeper rather than yours. So school doesn't matter, it's the passion for the course and what the society sees fit for your degree that is relevant to their industries. So far I know engineering degrees are quite good considering I've seen engineering masters who are working as investment banker earning nice pay roll while they can still work as an engineer director in some other company. Best of both worlds.

DigiPen student here. I'd say.. don't come to Digipen. I kind of regret not choosing SMU InfoSys back then.

In 2009 when SIT was setup by MOE, it wasnt an Autonomous Uni yet so it cant confer its own degrees thus bring in OU
This is how SIT-OU come about

In 2014 when SIT was conferred Autonomous Uni status, they started to confer their own degrees then

So theoretically speaking SIT-OU degrees are before when SIT was conferred an Autonomous Uni.
They are "leftover" degrees

Pertaining to your point of which is harder to go in.

SIT degrees are stated as Open to any diplomas and A lvls
SIT-OU degrees are stated as with Relevant diploma
(they even have a list of it for every SIT-OU course...)
====================================================

Like I said, the reason why SIT-OU degrees can never be recognised is because of the On-Campus factor

It is a degree conferred by an Overseas Uni. So the On-Campus aspect Rightfully you need to be attending the Home Campus of the OU and not SIT

This On-campus thing is stated across Accredition boards in Singapore
You can go check PEB (Professional engineers board), SMC (Singapore medical council), Bar admissions etc

You dont wanna risk it. Shortcut degree (in terms of duration) will result in shotcut pay

Even during the tea reception, During FAQ, some prof also stated that the GES is based on our SIT-OU degrees, not SIT degrees
Which they already admit that SIT-OU degrees are really getting seriously low pay

Please choose an SIT degree and not an SIT-OU degree

So what do you have to say about my irrelevant diploma to degree? I'm from engineering end up not even relevant to engineering at all. And also the course is open to a levels students. So not only dip holders

Just ignore ForSIT. He's just posting to make himself feel good and put others down that he can enter SIT and you couldn't.

3.4 ONLY. Yet, still so arrogant and cocky. Not as if your grades are top-notch.

Stop boasting around with your useless CCA records.
