Has anyone thought of the above idea? It's not specifically against the rules and regulations of the camp.

I was thinking of installing a directional antenna towards the public and see if it's possible to pick up any unsecured WiFi and just piggyback on it.

Here's several reasons why I would like to do this, currently with my PES status and vocational training they allocate too much time for training and in the end we spend a large amount of time doing nothing as majority of us are fast learners. I would like to be more productive during this period of wasted time and have greater freedom to the internet as Telecom providers in Singapore charge quite a fair bit for Mobile Data.

unauthorised access to any wifi network, regardless of whether it is secured or unsecured is still illegal.

Sorry I was referring to Wireless@SG, not unsecured WiFis.
Did you grow up in sg?

Also how you know

"It's not specifically against the rules and regulations of the camp." To install a directional antenna?

unless you are streaming videos, the local mobile data is more than sufficient for "productive" usages.

I'm using Coursera while in camp, so indeed it is taking quite alot of mobile data.

Not for a very long time. I'm just asking if this is any way possible, you don't have to get one of those insanely large antennas, I'm talking more along the lines of Nanostation M or the Picostation by Ubiquiti Networks.

Hi TS, it's great that you've taken an interest in improving your knowledge while serving but you won't get any productive replies here since your question seems to be more tech-related and not as much of NS protocol.

You might want to explore alternatives like asking a friend/relative with a large data plan to sign up for a multi-SIM that you can share. I've kept my legacy 12GB singtel plan for 2 years now and have 3 devices that rely on it for data. If I knew someone personally in your situation I wouldn't mind sharing the 12GB and the cost of the multi-SIM together. If you can't manage something like this, you'd be better off doing your homework on other tech-related forums about the range of these antennas. You should probably do a scan on the signal strength of nearby hotspots and the reliability of the power supply in your camp as well.

Oh and always remember SAF's 8th (or 9th?) core value - Do anything you want, just don't get caught ;)

so technically u actually do not know whether it's not against the rules and regulations, but because the gadget you want to use is small, you are planning to use it secretly?

Somehow I read it more as NS protocol related than tech.

well, for coursera, you can download the videos easily before hand and you don't have to rely on internet.

long range wireless@sg? i don't think can stream coursera smoothly anyway.

and your point about it not being against rules and regulation does not hold water. your device will have USB and LAN port, a small processor and it has communications capability. if your unit anal, they can send you for SIB investigation very easily.

2nd, the time you plan to use is meant for training, yes, u can be smart, blah blah, use less time, bottom line, this time belongs to the unit. you do anything else, be it legal to the confines of SAF, you are still wrong, because you are not following orders by doing your training.

look, i'm not here to debate with you, its your life, do whatever you want. but if i'm you, I will try my best to achieve my aims more descreetly.
