Good Day.

I am intending to sign on with SPF, but I have 1 question with regards to progression whilst in the Force which I am unable to find answers to.

My question is, if I were to sign on after my Diploma as a Sergeant, then go and complete my University studies and get a Degree, will I be able to advance to the rank of Inspector, or will I instead stay as a Sergeant / Whatever Rank I may be holding at that point of time?

As stated above, I'm unable to find answers Online, so thank you to whomever answers this question in advance.

You definitely can become an Inspector by signing on Sgt but it is not easy, not everybody gets nominated to go for degree, they let those who have been there longer go for it. And even having obtain a degree as a Sgt wouldn’t guarantee you a Inspector rank, you need to be interviewed. You do not need a degree to be Inspector as they do allow Sgt to be promoted to Inspector but you need to clock experience and years and there is not guarantee.

You won't be guaranteed promotion to Inspector if you sign on as DES even after getting a degree. Subject to your performance you may get emplaced as Inspector through the "Acting Inspector" scheme or go through transition interview (not sure what's the term but is to assess your suitability to go through the senior officer course) both of which do not have a degree requirement. If you wanna be an Inspector directly, better to get a degree then apply even that is no guarantee you will get it.

Usually for Junior Officers, INSP /ASP rank is your pinnacle career rank. Its better to sign on with a degree and go right into INSP.

the use of "Junior Officers" for Insp & ASP is incorrect. These ranks are considered as "Senior Officers".

JO refers to SI and below, even that a constable is also a JO.

Classification in SPF is different from SAF, where all uniformed personnel in SPF are "officers". Unlike in the SAF, only 2LT and above are "officers".

Not true, my OC was a JO in service 27 years, now holding rank of Supt 1, some of those below him from JO to DSP...

Uniformed group promote scholars first is a common knowledge la, you need to work hard to go up, the reason you hear all these stories is becoz many of them come from farmers who go in to just have a stable job but upset when their peers who work hard climb up the ladder.

Understand from some friends, if possible.. get a local degree sign on as SO aka Insp rank... u do the math..

1) get a local degree 4yrs... go in striaght away as a Insp..

2) go in with diploma, direct sgt.. high chance but not 100% of progressing to minimal rank of senior officer a Insp.. definately u need to work v hard, with gd performance.. then u also need to able to mingle with ur supervisor cause whether u got chance to promote anot depend on ur supervisor grading of u.. to kill u... he can easily have 100 reasons... to promote u he also can easily have 100 reasons. To have everything in place.. maybe ard 8 to 10yrs? Another thing is the path will be different compare to 1 direct entry Insp n one promote from sgt to Insp..

So if u can, get a local degree 1st.. 4 yrs outside.. at the sometimes u also can take ur time to think whether do u wanna join spf

I never said Insp/ASP are "Junior Officers", what i mean was for "Junior Officers" the highest they can be promoted to "Senior Officers" rank is Insp/ASP.

There are a few JO hitting SSI promoted to INSP/ASP before they retired.

Your best chances to be a Senior Officer is sign on after getting your degree.

If you sign on with a diploma you are struck in Junior Officer scheme whereby its hard to move up to SO since most JO have degrees during their career (part time studies).

Just to add the Singapore Civil Service has a few classifications on your CEP (current estimated potential/career end point) based on your entry qualification. For uni grads are as follows:

1. Ivy League Unis (Oxford, MIT, Cambridge and etc)
2. Top 3 SG uni (NUS/NTU/SMU)
3. Non Ivy League overseas unis or SIM GE unis
4. Other SG unis (SUSS)
