Hi all, right now I would like to use an external mic and a headphone together on a laptop. As you all know laptops usually only come with one audio jack. I tried using a audio splitter (the one with 2 female heads to combine into one) which did not work. Is there another way?

Edit: My phone recognizes the split. And I have only tested it on my PC which has separate jacks for speaker and mic.

Thanks

Your 2 female head splitter is split audio into 2, or split it into mic and audio female?

Don't get wrong one..

Is split into mic and audio type. And I don't wish to get an external sound card. Is there anyway to tweak the settings? If a phone can recognize the split I think a pc/laptop would surely be able to.

Not sure about this, but phone usually combine both because earpiece usually comes with mic so can talk on phone. Laptop maybe not..? Unless MacBook? Curious about this as well.
External USB card usually works

the 3.5mm jack on the phone is already output + mic input capable. Of course it will recognize the spit. IN fact, it doesn't even need the splitter: plug in a standard earphone + mic headset or earpiece from any hardware shop into the phone and it will work. Notice how the male pin has three marked rings on it? One of them is for the mic input. If there is no additional contact point in the jack to accommodate the third ring (most standard earphone jacks only support 2 contact points), the mic input will never work.

Notebook jacks, especially the older ones, are designed for the middle type in the picture and thus are not capable of output + mic input.

The male head of the splitter is the one on the right. Because I prefer using a headphone and an external mic separately that is why I am trying with the splitter. So it is technically impossible to make the notebook recognize the split?

I just tried with the notebook and I got the same result. Realtek HD Audio manager only recognizes the headphone and not the mic. The notebook I am using is ASUS K451
