looking for builder to assembly a diy NAS

hi guys, I'm looking for pc builder to help me build a pc with unraid os experience. looking at to have the computer as a nas rather than purchasing synology or Qnap

hey.. i was thinking of the same idea. but i used freenas instead of unraid os. i don have much luck either.. perhaps we could discuss/research more? i previously post but not much luck.. then i gave up to buy the synology nas.. it was much easier to configure in terms of the permission settings.. i have problems setting permissions on freenas..

cool,from what I read, freenas seems harder to configure. so now you got synology? What's your model?

unraid os isnt free. and i played arnd with freenas before.. actually its quite simple but i could not get the permission settings to work nicely. am now using ds416. save all the hassle though i could get better performance with a desktop running freenas.

yup unraid is not free but I can run my games and nas on just one CPU. not sure if freenas got this but unraid can add additional storage easily.
ya the advantage of getting ds416 is saving all the hassle but you'll get a lousier performing system.

I'm using Synologies

and moved on to PC NAS

Firstly, a NAS is a NAS, not a multi purpose device
If you intend to play games / do work on your pC, and let your PC have NAS functions, you are simply inviting danger to your data

For NAS
Look for a low-powered Mobo and case
I went with the As Rock J3455 ITX mobo but there are cheaper ones like MSI N3160, all of which are not available locally

Choose a cheapo raid card

Settle on your casing ( i went with an old Lian Li Q25 i had lying around )

Ultimately, i am going for fault redundancy so i went with Windows 10

The main advantage of a synology over a pc setup
Available Apps to access your NAS
Ability to sync multiple Google Drive accounts to your NAS

Above two is solely the reson why i still use a synology for work.

If you are the sole user of the NAS, the apps won't be much of a concern. But if your GF / Parents / Siblings / friends also need to use the NAS, explaining the connection process, AND assising them can take a while..

Advice is to ask yourself if you are willing to learn to support the NAS in the event of total failure. If you willing, take any NAS OS and go try it out.
If NOT, stick to what you are comfortable with.

Those who have experienced NAS / HBA failures will understand what i mean when i say that the feeling of being totally helpless when you cannot access your data when you need it most, is priceless.

And when you have to deal with a support ticket system when the mfr has no phone support is @#$#%#$

actually i also agree with tmfwy. i know it can be done using your pc as a nas, gaming machine, workstation. but it isnt safe. synology made it so much simpler in terms of accessibility and other functions. i normally use it just for nas.. but previously i wanted to save cost and have better specs so i tried doing the freenas but failed in the end.. not sure if the os that time buggy.

Unless you have need for the advanced functions, just setting to shared folders is more than sufficient for a file server.

I used to stuff a Lian Li V2000 Tower casing with 20x HDDs back in those days. Used it also as my main rig.

Everytime BSOD, i hard reset. Everytime game hang, i hard reset. You get the picture. When it came time to migrate, i don't know what has been corrupted. It was only years later when i went back to individually preview each file that i was able to diffeentiate what was corrupted and what was not.

that was a painful experience. however, if using the windows file server, how are we going to connect from external say using phone?

When the disks started to fail one by one I moved on to Synology. As u get older, u treasure your free time more. Have already played till sian with Enterprise SAN, DAS and NAS at work already, So for home setup, lesser the hassle is better.

So TS, will urge u to think what's your objective of building a NAS.

If it's to play with it then by all means go ahead and have fun. Lots of things u can experiment with.

If u intend to store your precious data, then only build your own only if you are proficient in it. That includes knowing exactly what to do when u wake up one morning and the NAS complaint array failed to load, or fsck failed when u rebooted it. The array will fail, just when only. When u start losing data, you will feel as if your whole world has collapsed. It's a very painful feeling.

Nowadays I keep 2 backups, one locally to another NAS and a remote backup to the cloud for data too precious to lose or impossible to replace

Yeah, cost of time.
If ts looking for some1 to diy for him, it means , add cost of service from 3rd party.

I got a few synology units.
Get asus router. Telco free router has a lot things to manual setup.
Plug in hdd .
Click click click.
Done.

I get
1. Cloud file sync for pc.
2. Raid storage.
3. webdav.
4. Photo file sync for phones.
5. Ddns.
6. Technical support team.

I dont use much features anyway.

Any thing spoil only 2 distributor to find.
1 for hdd
1 for synology it self.
