Low end Haswell or I7?

I have $800 budget. I read that the 3 new things haswell offers

-10% increase in performance
-2x better on board graphic.
-more power saving in idle mode

If the price of haswell is let say $400 and the price of i7 is $300, won't it make more economic sense to get i7 if we are not planning to use the onboard graphic and we do not care about power consumption? Or is haswell still a better choice?

if full system, it'll probably be just enough to net u an i7 ivb + mobo + something else (aka $800 not enough.)

Not sure what you mean by lowest end Haswell. I think at launch date, there should only be the quad core Haswell, which is not really the lowest end.

Anyway, there has been a lot of speculation on its performance relative to the Ivy Bridge chips, but I think its hard to tell until NDA has been lifted and reviews pouring in. If you are not in a rush to get a com, I think might as well just sit back and wait since its a month away.

Are you aware of Intel's pricing policy for the past few generations of CPU?

Serious doubts it will be x2 the onboard graphics of Ivy.

As far as early previews, only their high end models get the better onboard.

I think that models in the same segment are priced similarly. For example, if i7-3770K is priced at $400, then i7-4770K , the Haswell equivalent, will also be priced similarly.

Of course, that's Intel's policy. I don't know how to local resellers are gonna handle it. So lets say i7-3770 drops to $350. Who's to say that the Haswell part that is priced at $350 doesn't outperform the 3770?

That's why it's better to wait for Benchmarks.

Exactly. I did not keep track of the first gen (Nehalem) prices, but from Sandy to Ivy and to the purportedly leaked Haswell prices, Intel replaces a chip on the current line up with its successor for each price point. Price of the new chip is roughly on par with the older, maybe adjusted for inflation or thereabout. There is no change in CPU speed and only small gains in terms of IPC, so the pricing of Haswell is expected to follow the existing trend. Meanwhile, Intel does not drop prices of the EOL CPUs. When Ivy was released, the Newegg prices for Sandy did not drop at all, till the chips were out of stock.

This of course, refers to Intel's prices to distributors. The retail prices will vary depending on distributor. Microcenter in the US is famous for low price deals but Newegg prices remain fairly consistent. Meanwhile, the retail prices in Europe (including the UK) and some parts of the world are significantly higher than US prices (Canuckistan Newegg prices are famously higher than their southern cousins).
