Hi,

I'm currently 21 and serving NS with 1 year to go. I graduated with a 2.1 GPA in poly and I would like to study a degree in marketing.

I've done some research and found the realistic options to be UOL and SIM-RMIT for a local degree. However, I'd very much like to study overseas for various reasons. From what I've gathered, I won't get a look in with UK and Aussie unis with my grades as they look at GPA / A levels. On the other hand, US unis look at SAT and O level grades if I'm not wrong? If this is the case, would getting a good SAT score override my poor GPA or would it still pull me down in my application? I scored a 9 for my L1R4 and 13 for my L1B5 for my O's.

Before the derisive comments come in, I'd like to state that I fully grasp the reality of my situation. I ****ed up in poly and I accept that I deserve what I have now. I did a lot of thinking in NS however and decided that I would go for it if given a second chance, namely by studying and scoring well for the SAT if it's a valid option for getting a degree overseas.

Thanks for reading, and do share some advice if you have it!

an L1R4 of 9 means u're quite smart after all, all u need is motivation. Why not take a degree here (SIM Rmit and uni of stirling both have marketing) then move on towards a masters overseas(possibly on a scholarship if u do well)?

Just curious, why did you opt for the Poly route ? You had quite a few JC options, and even a below average A levels grade would be better than your 2.1 gpa.

R u looking at the Go8? Maybe u can try the Aussie unis with lower ranking?

I was under the impression my GPA was beyond hope for any overseas unis, even the lower ranked ones, unless I took the SAT / ACT and tried for a US uni? I've tried searching online but I don't really know where to look for such a uni that accepts my GPA.

I hadn't considered that, thanks.

I wasn't thinking straight about my future at all. Just wanted to get out of that 'secondary school' study mentality. I only got what I got for the O's because my teachers pushed me very hard, which in hindsight I'm very thankful for. In poly I lost all motivation to get good grades which I regret dearly now.

On a side note I'll be going down to USEIC soon to learn more about how US unis work, would be great if anyone had stuff to share about this topic!

Ur story similar to mine haha. L1R5 I got 14 but since the JCs I can choose are not great I went poly route.

Didn't study hard at all in poly. Got GPA 2.9 but mainly those come from projects. I have a friend who is 2nd in cohort and he always accepts me into his project group, hence the good project grades.

Budget??? Overseas edu not cheap leh
USEIC isn't much help if u don't pay for services.
Few ppl gone thru them and gone to research on their on with uni sites and forum. Ie college confidential or brightsparks

Not all uni accept Os and SAT.
Only few of the better ones do
Ie
Purdue
Indiana
Iowa
Arizona -- No need sat just o
Oregon
U Washington --- maybe
Umn -- depends on dept, biz they expect As

Other top uni - your competition has As they want ppl with As.

Canada pretty similar
Uni such as MUN accept Os no SAT and it's cheap as cad$19k a yr for tuition and living
Others u need As or Dip

Note these uni do not offer generous adv standing unlike oz or UK uni

I went to poly that time too though I could go to JC with L1R4 12. But then I couldn't go to the better JCs that's why I choose the poly route. Never really studied hard in poly that's why GPA is considered low.

SAT is merely an add-on consideration for admission into their degree courses.

It does not grant you any distinct advantage. The main consideration still comes from your high school grades.

Unless you are willing to go for a state university of US, UK or Aust, chances are close to zero. If you have financial difficulty, UNISIM or SIMGE is a good choice as I believe they don't really consider grades as long as you have the diploma.

SIMGE doesn't really matter on grades.
Biz diploma: 1.5yrs
Others: 2 yr
As : 3yr
But it still depends on the popularity and the number of student intakes.
For e.g: a course in marketing is very popular but have only 200 seats and your results is lower than the last entry person.
Then u don't gain that space.

I have recently graduated and many of my school mate have this sentiment that the final class and things contributing to resume are the actual thing that affect your first job.

My point is go for your interest because you will then naturally have more motivation and do well. If you compare between college's ranking, yes they do matter but for your context they probably don't vary too vast to make a difference. For example, if you are a 2nd class honors compared to a first class in a lower ranked college. The first class actually has better options eg. scholarship, crossing career fields.

Ask yourself which course can you triumph not which course can triumph for you.

You do know that o levels is the equivalence of the US high school diploma right? :s22::s22: I believe with sat score over 2.1k, chances of getting admission to the top 50 USA universities is not impossible. diploma merely gives u an advanced standing to their courses. If you start off as a freshman, they look at yr o level grades not your diploma grades. Hope that helps.
