Any sexpert here on tape drive?

I have around 10 TB of data every week. Currently it take around 4 day to finish on LTO4.

I'm considering upgrading to LTO 6 and a new LTO 6 tape library. How much faster do you think it will be?

I think that there is a lot of consideration when doing backup strategy.

1) Your throughput from Servers to Tape Drive. (Is it delicate link?)
2) Server resources usage during the time of backup.

Since you got such a huge data, do you ever think of getting 2 tape drive and split your data backup?

When it comes to restoration, it might be faster rather than rely on 1 tape drive.

I installed the backup exec on the main file server itself so it is the fastest link.

will 2 tape drive means double the speed? Will there be a bottle neck at the disk speed?

Your 10TB is all on 1 single file server? If that the case, I believe your tape drive is directly connected to your file server via SAS?

It been a while since I got back on backup. Having 2 tape drive can helps to run 2 backup jobs in 1 window. However I not sure if they can be run on a single server using 1 software.

The idea I was giving you is when you have multiple server to run backup to a single backup server. In that case, you might need a private network with a delicate gigabit switch to connect those servers together and run backup.

This would ensure your existing main connection link is clear from heavy data transfer due to backup.

Ok. Just to note that you might need to budget for additional software licenses on backup exec as well.
