May I can a 33inch height luggage be brought into the JR train?

I brought 30L backpack to all types of train manned by JR. Limited express and shinkansen have 'airport style' overhead without cover. For normal subway train, it is metallic overhead. Airport express train has floor compartment specific for luggage in the train car.

So, why not. It may be a troubling if you are bringing it in the crowded subway train.

Erm... 30L backpack is quite small compared to a 33inch luggage.

For shinkansen, there are space for luggage and the end of each carriage. So shldnt be a problem

Although the size is relative, the catch is whether the bag/luggage is quite troubling on your back or your side. Either 30L or 33 inch luggage does bring much inconvenience to the passengers, who are standing next/behind to you, in the subway train.

So long as you are consciously looking for ways not to cause trouble to others, you should be fine. If you are travelling in a group and each bringing along a 33, then you should avoid crowding together. Try to board the train via separate doors so that your luggage wont all jam up at one spot.

Thanks for the responses , it's just a couple trip . One 32 inch luggage and 1 28 inch luggage . I figured one will be stowed on top and the other to be placed. Behind the last row seats

You will have big problem.
The overhead stowage area is small. I tried to put my luggage, half of it will be intruding out (Not Safe so i took it down!)
They are built for Domestic traveller Japanese tiny luggage! Carry on type for plane

I brought my 30 inch luggage a few times to Japan and got a lot of issues as well.
Zero change of putting that size of luggage on top. That compartment is very small!
I seriously doubt 28 inch can slot in. 20 Inch maybe possible

Your second plan of behind the last row of seats. That one unless you are sitting at that row of seat if not you can't put anything there. Putting any luggage will prevent that seat from reclining. Very inconsiderate.

Limited Express, Super Express (Shinkansen) will have problem. What i do for all my trips is buying Green Car seat which is much more expensive (Business class for train). That cabin is quite empty for certain routes so can just put in front of empty seats.

Another method i do for some trains that got low frequency (Possibility of even Green Car being full) is that i specifically find the layout of the train (Seating Arrangment) and then when booking the ticket i request for the last row of seat. i.e sacrifice recline of my seat for luggage.
This need to be careful when planning because if you request the first row by mistake (I done that before), you will be sacrificing your legroom. Last trip, i had the worse 2 hours of train ride ever. Can't put on top, so only way is putting in front of my leg. Throughout the trip was hopping that the ride will end soon.

increasing popular method is people will courier their luggage to different cities.

For Local lines need to depends on timing (Peak hours or not) and also which train route
Some train routes will run at 200% capacity during morning peak. Very scary, worst than SMRT type of crowd.

Unless it's shinkansen, otherwise on most trains there is no space for anything bigger than a cabin luggage, let alone a 33", unless it's off peak but still it's a struggle sitting down and having to hold on to the luggage handle to prevent luggage rolling (assume yours is 4 wheeler)...

usually we will just have them infront of us, especially on Shinakansen, where on some trains doesn't have a storage rack at the rear or when it is full. I never bring anything bigger than a 26", 33" will be an issue. I find the first row have more leg room. But if you are traveling with 4 pax, then u can adjust the seats to face each other and the luggage and be placed in the middle.

Done that on local JR trains before. As long as you are aware of the surrounding and avoid peak hours; if necessary, wait for a few more trains until you have space.

The rule of thumb is: do not inconvenience others and you should be fine.
(this applies to local trains). So just find a corner and hide there haha

As for Shinkansen and airport express, they have space for luggage.

I went with my 27" during my first trip to japan, totally regret it! me and my friend were sitting together with this poor japanese guy who's by the window. and we had 2 large luggage in front of us. no legroom for 2.5hrs and when he had to get down, we have to move out together with our luggage. and it's super inconvenient esp when the train is crowded and there's only that much time for him to get off.

it's either you courier it to your hotel, or you don't bring such a big one. from that experience, no larger than 24", which fits nicely on the overhead. i also try to bring the luggage down early so that i dont cause any inconvenience to others. and even if i were to put the luggage at my seat, the person in front of me can still recline and all, so it's not as bad.

One problem with wheeled luggage is that the smaller towns may not have lifts to cross the train platforms so you will have to carry it up the stairs.

My suggestion would be to base yourself in the bigger city and visit the smaller towns as a day trip or lighter pack while storing the bigger pieces at the hotel.

If it is empty space for carrying back souvenir, it would be best to leave the majority of your shopping at the end of the trip and carry foldable bags for those. Take note of the expiry dates cos the Tokyo banana you buy may expire before you return.
